CALVIN SYNOD HERALD — 7 — REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA their pastors to keep their church active and prosperous. There are still 12 charter members who are living. The women of the church contributed much, both financially and with their work for the church. The Dorcas Guild’s famous “Hungarian Recipes” cookbook is still in demand The Rev. Tibor Petroczy is presented with a gift upon his 20th anniversary in the ministry and 5th anniversary at Elyria. from all over the United States and Canada. Over 100,000 copies have been sold since the cookbook was first published in 1952 under the direction of Mrs. Louis G. Novak, wife of the pastor. The Dorcas Guild gave the money from the cookbooks to their church. In 1953 the sanctuary and the building were enlarged at a cost of over $100,000. In two years the mortgage was paid, mostly from the donations of members and the Dorcas Guild’s cookbooks. There are also two other Guilds — the Martha and Rebecca Guilds who also do their share of the work. Presently the membership is about 325 members. Services are still held in both languages — English and Hungarian every Sunday. the church many times, but unable to reach it by a legal route, we drove in reverse for two blocks to get to the parking lot. In a sense we went in reverse to reach our goal and be part of the celebration, but that is really the essence of an anniversary — going backwars, remembering the past. As we went back in time and space we were happy to observe that the Elyria congregation and its pastor are still very much in “drive” and moving forward in their service of the Hungarian community. CKK Elyria celebrates 65th The age of 65 is usually associated with retirement. In the case of the Elyria Magyar United Church of Christ the age of 65 is associated with continuous employment of devotion and service in the work of our Lord. On Sunday, October 25, 1981, we enjoyed good Hungarian food and friendly fellowship at the Anniversary Celebration. The English sermon was delivered by Dr. Jacob Wagner, Western Reserve Association Minister, and the sermon in Hungarian was delivered by Rev. Stephen Csutoros, son of the late Rev. Elek Csutoros who was the organizing pastor in 1916. The living charter members are Mrs. Caroline Botos, Mr. Charles Elek, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Elek, Mrs. Michael Laczi, Mrs. Steve Lengyel, Sr., Mr. Frank Mihályi, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Pandi, Sr., Mr. Steve Varga, and Mr. and Mrs. James Varadi. Those who were able attended the church service and dinner. Mr. William Peter, Elder, served as the Master of Ceremonies at the dinner. A very desciplined audience listened intently to the brief remarks given by the honorary guests. Also on the program was a vocal solo by Mrs. Roberta Kalassay Super and a flute solo by Miss Shelly Nagy. Piano accompaniest was Mrs. Helen Kolopus. Another anniversary was celebrated this day and it was that of the Rev. Tibor Petroczy. It was his 20th Anniversary in the ministry and also the 5 th year as pastor of the Elyria congregation. Rev. Petroczy beamed with happiness and you could tell he was pleased with his congregation. Many of the neighboring pastors also participated in this anniversary celebration indicating a true ecumenical spirit of brotherhood exists in the community. It seemed that the city fathers of Elyria arranged the streets in such a fashion that all the one way directions were leading away from the church, and only the residents knew the secret passage to the right approach. After circling the vicinity of KINDNESS DURING LIFE I would rather have one little rose From the garden of a friend Than to have the choicest flower When my stay on earth must end. I would rather have one pleasant word In kindness said to me Than flattery when my heart is still And life has ceased to be. I would rather have a loving smile From friends I know are true Than tears shed around my casket When this world I’ve bid adieu. Bring me all your flowers today Whether pink or white or red I’d rather have one blossom now Than a truck load when I’m dead. Some of the charter members who were able to attend the Elyria anniversary were sitting at the middle table.
