The whole Church is called to sainthood! The apostle Paul addressed his letters long ago to the community of believers and called ordinary people to a level of life and loving service that reflected their holy calling as Christians. Even as he called upon the “common person” to accept this special sainthood, Paul made it clear that no saint stands alone — saints stand and work together. Their togetherness gave the Church life then; and keeps it alive today. We are “called to be saints — together!’' Among those saints are the retired ministers and their spouses who together served over the years to bring God’s people together in mission. Once a year in the Christmas Fund appeal, we are called together to honor several hundred of the “senior saints” whose special needs have been brought to our attention by conferences. We remember them with a Christmas gift from the whole fellowship. TOGETHER WE HELP IN EMERGENCIES . . . Another together function of the Christmas Fund is direct help given to ministers and their families facing emergencies. Responsible churches and agencies of the church provide their workers with the basic benefit package including health, disability and life insurance. But the unforseen emergency—the accident, death in the family, uninsured losses — calls for quick action by the conference office and the Emergency Fund. Your Christmas Fund gifts provide reserves that are brought to bear on needs. Together we help, whether the minister is active or retired. All year long the healing concern is alert and ready. The United Church Board for Ministerial Assistance, through its Grants Committee, responds to the documented need promptly. Here are some emergency situations in which the Emergency Fund has been a vital support for our clergy: Health insurance for the disabled minister and family. Special education for the handicapped. Special help for dependents of deceased ministers. Emergency living costs. Nursing care in certain situations. Special equipment, wheel chairs, hearing aids, glasses. Extra expenses resulting from accidents, fire or flood. Psychotherapy beyond insured benefits. (Continued on page 5)
