REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA 7 Christ, the Lord of the world and the Church, permits us to share in making manifest the unity which He in fact effects by his Word and Spirit.’ On the occasion when Your Holiness inaugurates his pontificate, we present, on behalf of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, our fraternal wishes and the assurance of our prayers. Dr. Edmond Ferret Prof. Dr. James I. McCord General Secretary President RFS, Nov. ’78 * 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS DECEMBER 10, 1978 Geneva — The Secretary-General of the United Nations has requested that the Thirtieth Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights be observed all over the world. In response to this request, the Executive Committee of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches has already issued a major statement reaffirming the conviction “that human rights ought to be guaranteed to all persons everywhere.” As the WARC has been involved in a massive study of the Theological Basis of Human Rights, RPS asked the Theological Secretary of the Alliance about the meaning of the anniversary on December 10. Said the Rev. Richmond Smith: “As Christians we must continually be on guard lest we are tempted to think that by studying a problem we are in fact doing something about it. The stark reality of human rights demands right action at the right time and in the right place. As disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ our thinking and our doing must belong together.” RPS, Dec. 78 A VISIT TO BOHEMIA AND MORAVIA A group of the pastors in the North-Pest Seniorate of the Reformed Church, led by Senior Zoltán Fónagy, made a visit to Bohemia and Moravia in the first week of October. At the invitation of the leaders of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren, the Hungarian delegation visited those parishes in which Hungarian pastors had served two-hundred years ago. More than 70 Hungarian pastors volunteered to serve there between 1781 and 1858, thus giving brotherly help after a period of severe historical trials. After the troops of the Hapsburg dynasty had inflicted an annihilating blow in the Battle of the White Mountain in 1620 upon the Czechs fighting for their independence, tens of thousands of them were forced to flee from the subsequent terror into various countries of Europe, including Hungary, or were compelled to return to the Roman Catholic fold. Those clinging to their ancient faith had to live as an underground church during the following 160 years. The Tolerance Edict of 1781 revived the Protestant congregations which, however, did not have either pastors or teachers or schools. It was at this time that the Hungarian Reformed Church came to their aid by sending about seventy volunteer pastors and teachers to Bohemia and Moravia. Now it is the places in which these volunteers had served that the group of Hungarian Reformed pastors visited. (Continued from page 2) THE REV.
