Perhaps this is one of the reasons that our resolution on Romania sailed through the General Synod, that the World Service Division sent $5,000 to Transylvanian Earthquake Relief, that the “Hungarian Reformed Diaspora” is among the UCC “Projects for Designated Giving with Basic Support Credit.” Surely, occasionally we have to correct the erroneous attitude of some UCC leaders, as we did in the case of Dr. H. Schomer’s report on Romania, but we can truthfully say that our relationship to our denomination is wholesome and healthy, even though we are in constant love’s quarrel with many of its policies. (b) PARTICIPATION IN CIVIC AND RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS. Let us remind ourselves that in the last 45 years we co-operated in several noteworthy events. In 1976 we remembered the 400th anniversary of the Galley Slave history of our Hungarian Reformed ancestors, and although we could not celebrate it “all together,” the martyrs’ memory enriched our lives in many ways (special bulletin, services, plaque, cantata, etc.). In the same year we participated in the bi-centennial observances of the country for which many Hungarians, like Col. Commander Michael Kovats de Fabricy gave their lives. Our 1976 Synod meeting in Washington, D.C. and the banner dedication ceremony on May 9, 1979 also in Washington, D.C. are clear testimonies that we are Americans of Hungarian descent bleeding and fighting for the welfare of this country. While we could not participate in the activities of the American Hungarian Federation more fully, we took special pride that a distinguished member of our Synod was elected president of the Hungarian Ref. Federation of America in 1976 (Rt. Rev. A. George). Yes, friends, bless the Lord that we have survived ... together... in His ministry... with others. You know that this is not the end of ALL HIS BENEFITS for which we should express gratitude. However, they are sufficient enough, I hope, to repeat: “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy Name!” SHORTCOMINGS: CONFESS THEM! Of course, we have shortcomings, too. We have to be free and humble enough to confess them, knowing fully well that “if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (I. John 1:8-9). Confessing our sins to one another is the road to meaningful prayer and healing (James 5:16). Let us ask, then, ourselves now: Where have we failed in the last 4 years generally and in last year particularly? I mention three areas. of Passaic their golden jubilee on May 20, 1979. Congratulations! — At the celebration of the 200th anniversary of Col. Commander Michael Kovats’ heroic death at Charleston, N.C., a fourmember delegation (Dr. Butosi, Dr. Vitéz, Rev. Király, Rev. Z. Szabó) represented the Synod in Washington, D.C. on May 9, 1979. THE YOUTH CONFERENCE will be held on Aug. 19-25 at First Presbyterian Church Camp, Ligonier, Pa. All information has been mailed to our pastors in May. Please make every effort to encourage our youth to attend. Camp Director Dr. L. Medyesy is doing his best! THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE of the Presbyter’s Association is planned for September 2 and 3,1979 at Ligonier, Pa. Please, plan to attend! THE 12TH GENERAL SYNOD of our denomination starts on June 22 in Indianapolis, Ind. Our delegates are: the Rt. Rev. A. Beretz, Rev. Dr. A. Havadtoy, Mr. A. Kurimai. Bishop Parragh also plans to attend as an Associate Delegate. CHAIRPERSONS who failed to return the material given to them at Synod Meeting, are asked to do so at their earliest convenience!
