Let the people of God know this as assuredly as nature demonstrates it in these days: “Every dead leaf that still clings on to the barren branches is doomed because new life will push it off in the spring.” Fast if you must for this victory! “For fasting is nothing else than a necessity for the time being, whereby we are humbled before God and deprive the flesh of its fuel so that it may more willingly and easily obey the Spirit.” (II. Helv. Conf. XXIV.) Lent is Spring! OFFICIAL CALL: The 41st Annual Meeting of The Calvin Synod Conference of the United Church of Christ will be held on May 21, 22 and 23, 1979 at the United Church of Christ, 963 Laurel Avenue, Bridgeport, Ct. In preparation of the meeting: — ELECT YOUR DELEGATES (regular and alternate) and report their names to the Bishop’s Office no later than April 15, 1979. — SEND TRAVEL EQUALIZATION QUOTA of $175.00 to Synod Treasurer, Rev. Z. Király before May 1, 1979. (The increase of $25.00 was necessitated by the increase of air fare and gasoline) — ROOM RESERVATION FORMS will soon be mailed to churches. (The rates are $28.00 single and $32.00 double) Forms should be returned to Holiday Inn-Bridgeport before May 6, 1979. No guarantee beyond this date! — AGENDA and further information will reach you in April. THE STATISTICAL REPORTS: of the 39 churches 25 Yearbook Reports were returned before the deadline! Accordingly, membership in 18 congregations increased by 95, in 7 churches the decease is 261. We are still above the 5,000 mark. (Pastors are urged to mail the missing reports!) OUR PROPOSAL in regard to the Children’s Home Buildings of the Bethlen Home (see last issue of The Calvin Synod News) was rejected by the Board of Directors of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America in a referendum vote. We deeply regret the decision, because our intent to rent with an option to buy was turned down WITHOUT NEGOTIATION OR EXPLANATION, even though we were ready to modify our terms. Evidently the 41st Annual Meeting should re-assess the sad situation... At the same time we were asked to use our personal influence with the church members to continue their support of the Bethlen Home. Of course, the Conference Council forwarded the undesignated Bethlen Home donations to the Bethlen Home,, but perhaps more clarification is in order not to deceive our members. THE REV. DR. EVA FABIAN, representing our Synod at the UCC National Meeting of Women on January 10-13 in Cincinnati, Ohio, writes: “I am happy that I could participate at the Cincinnati meeting. At least we know where we stand.. . The conference was a most necessary ingathering of UCC women... There were several good presentations, but the leadership did not find a golden middle to coordinate the clergy (Continued on page 7) Cover Painting by Zoltán de Bényey
