Dr. John Butosi, Bishop 963 Laurel Avenue Bridgeport, Conn. 06604 203-368-6358 RIGHTS OF CHURCH PRESS AFFIRMED BY UCC GROUP Church communicators must be granted access to information, freedom of inquiry and the right to exercise editorial judgement, according to a recent statement issued by the National Council of Churches Communications Commission. Calling on all American churches to adopt the Sept. 21 statement, the Commission’s board of managers said the protection of editorial freedom is consistent with the churches’ commitment to the Gospel of “honesty,” fairness, courage and openness.” “Without these conditions,” the board said, “the integrity and effectiveness of communication from the church is compromised.” Official Communications WE CALL IT “NEW YEAR” — but 1979 will be just ANOTHER year without the RENEWING SPIRIT OF GOD. May He who makes all things new (Rev. 21:5) renew the right spirit within us to seek and serve His will in 1979! THE 1978 YEAR BOOK REPORTS, mailed to our pastors on December 29, are to be completed and returned to the Bishop’s Office no later than Feb. 1, 1979. Please, cooperate. It is better to estimate the needed data than to delay. IN DISTRIBUTING FUNDS, please, remember: (a) ERDELY (earthquake damaged churches, two special wheelchairs to a 17 year old boy and a 22 year old girl in Transylvania) ; (b) BETHLEN HOME FUND for the purchase and operation of our Hungarian Ref. Center; (c) OUR SOUTH AMERICAN CHURCHES in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay (OCWM credit is given for such donations) ; (d) REV. M. ORBÁN of Paris, France who is in dire need of financial assistance. SYNOD'S PROPOSAL, prepared by Atty. Frank E. Babycos of Bridgeport, Ct., in regard to the Children’s Home Buildings of the Bethlen Home was mailed to the Hungarian Ref. Federation of America on Oct. 28, 1978. The proposal is that (1) The Federation rents for $1.00 a year to the Synod for a period of 5 years the buildings; (2) The Synod be given an option during this lease period to purchase this “Home”; (3) During the lease period the Federation be responsible for all major repairs of the buildings and the Synod for the general normal maintenance and cost of utilities; (4) The Federation will pay the mortgage; (5) The Synod shall activate the buildings, employ needed personnel and set up a program. Further, the Synod will seek out from various churches and organizations “annual givings” for financing maintenance and eventual purchase of the buildings; Synod be entitled for representation on the Board of Directors of the Bethlen Home; (6) If the Board of Directors of the Home, the Federation and Synod delegates approve these terms, the lease and option to buy shall come to formal existence; (7) As the terms, or terms modified, have been agreed upon by the Federation, they will be presented to the delegates of the 40th Annual Meeting of the Synod. The approval of the referendum vote empowers the Conference Council to act upon and execute the necessary papers. — BETHLEN NAPTÁR 1979 which should be congratulated upon form and content, includes the Bishop’s article on the selling and purchasing of the Children’s Home (pp. 108-114). The same article appears in English in The Calvin Synod Herald. Read them! THE 1979 YOUTH CONFERENCE will be a joint undertaking of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America and of our Calvin Synod. This decision was reached at a consultation held in Munhall, Pa. on Nov. 24, 1978. Both bishops being present, the representatives of the two church bodies decided to have the joint camp at the Conference Center of the 1st Presb. Church of Pittsburgh at Ligonier, Pa. from Aug. 19 through 25. The theme of the conference will be “How to Be a Young Christian in Our Modern World.” Age limit: 14 to 18 years of age. The cost will be $65 per person. Daily schedule, regulations, and further information will soon be mailed to our churches. We rejoice in this “breakthrough.” K. Y. P.
