6 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD POLISH-HUNGARIAN WORLD FEDERATION AND AFFILIATES 2639 North Kimball Avenue, Chicago, III. 60647 Resolution adopted by the meeting and delegates of the Polish-Hungarian World Federation and Affiliates held in Chicago on May 13, 1978, concerning the plight of the Hungarian minority in Rumania (Transylvania): WHEREAS: The discrimination against the Hungarian and other minorities in Rumania is continuing and WHEREAS: The Rumanian government is conducting a campaign against the Hungarians, and, in particular, against their churches, suppressing their language, falsifying statistical and historical data and confiscating cultural archives, amounting to a blatant internal oppression. WHEREAS: There are 2 and half million Hungarians living in Transylvania, which they have inhabited for over .1,000 years, whose conditions are worsening from year to year. WHEREAS: If the tide of Rumanian chauvinism is not turned soon by the intervention of the United States, based on its HUMAN RIGHTS policy, this tide will develop into cultural genocide. THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That the Polish-Hungarian World Federation, as our contribution to the cause of human freedom and dignity, is protesting on behalf of the unfortunate peoples of Transylvania. BE IT RESOLVED: That proper action be undertaken in defense of the Hungarians in Transylvania for the purpose of achieving equality in cultural, national and civil rights. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That we appeal to the American Administration and Congress to take the necessary steps to effect fundamental changes of Rumanian policies toward the Hungarians, to eradicate discrimination, and create an acceptable status in Transylvania, whereby the Rumanians and Hungarians can work out their destinies in mutual understanding. OUR McKEESPORT CONGREGATION celebrates its 70th anniversary on Sept. 17. At the same time the pastor, Dr. Eva M. Fabian will be ordained and installed. Bishop Butosi will preach and conduct services. IN NORWALK, CT., our church will praise God at the 85th milestone, the Bishop delivering the message. ANNUAL OHIO DISTRICT CONFERENCE of presbyters and church workers will be held in our Buffalo, N.Y. church on Sept. 24. Topic: “Our Responsibilities and Duties as Church Leaders.” THE LADIES’ AID SOCIETY of our Norridge, 111. congregation celebrates the 60th anniversary on Sept. 24. THE CHURCH DEDICATION of our Cleveland, West Side Church has been postponed until November 19, 1978. THE EASTERN CLASSIS will have its fall workers conference on Oct. 15 in Perth Amboy, N.J. THE WESTERN CLASSIS has similar conference on Oct. 22 in Kalamazoo. VACANCY in Pittsburgh, Pa. has not been filled yet. Interested persons are to call the Bishop’s Office. BETHLEN ALMANAC will be published. Please, cooperate as soon as notification reaches you. WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY will be observed on October 1 with Neighbors in Need offerings. Let us not forget that our people in Erdély — Transylvania — are still struggling to rebuild their earthquake damaged church buildings ! ... THE HUMAN RIGHT ISSUE of Erdély was successfully raised on July 11 and 12 by the Conn. Hungarians at a meeting with Sen. A. Ribicoff and at the hearing of the Senate Subcommittee on Internat. Trade. THE RENOVATION of Theo. Academy buildings in Cluj-Kolozsvár has been approved in Romania. World Council of Churches has permission to support it up to $300,000.00. Our Conference Council will make recommendations to our churches.
