REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA 7 TEN SCORES OF YEARS By DR. STEPHEN SZABÓ Music by LESLIE KONDOROSSY (The Philadelphia Message for the Bicentennial. Paraphrase on Revelation 3:7-12. Between two Oceans this is my Nation! Richest and first by God’s destination. Ten scores of year proved it to be “Under God” best in all history. Simple people with simple names Swarmed to freedom across the waves; From all nations to Freedom’s Land To live in love with hand in hand. I do know your works, you are open door. You did keep my word, that you suffered for. My good name you have never denied Even in grave times, when hardly tried. When hour of Trial to earth will come, You’ll be pillar in Temple wall. Hold what you have; hold fast, hold fast! Don’t loose your crown ’till last, ’till last! They’ll try to seize it; with force, craft and might, Old foe and new foe to destroy your pride. For ten scores of years you held your place: For many tens more stay in God’s grace! Hold freedom and truth for you and all! God’s purpose with you should never fall. Hold what you have; hold fast, hold fast! Don’t loose your crown, ’till last, ’till last! * * * MODERN HEBREW TRANSLATION OF NEW TESTAMENT PUBLISHED Jerusalem (RNS) — A new contemporary Hebrew language translation of the New Testament has been published here under the auspices of the Israeli branch of the United Bible Society (UBS). It appears just 100 years after publication of the Hebrewlanguage translation of the New Testament by the German scholar Franz Delitzsch. The new translation, in up-to-date Hebrew idiom, is the product of an eight-year ecumenical team effort of Protestant and Roman Catholic scholars, headed by the Rev. Magne Solheim, a Lutheran pastor from Norway who is the UBS representative in Israel. Among the scholars involved in the project were Dr. Robert Lindsey, head of the Baptist Convention in Israel, and Father Gabriel Grossman, O.P., of the Dominican Fathers Isaiah House in Jerusalem. The Church Herald, May 13, 1977 SENTENCE SERMONS! Before you flare up at another’s faults, count ten — ten of your own! The principal trouble with the state of matrimony is an unwillingness to be governed by the laws of the union. Isn’t it hard to believe that one of the big reasons for the founding of our nation was to avoid taxes? Never miss an opportunity to make others happy even if you have to leave them alone to do it. You can rely on people to neither remember or forget. The Parish Paper, Santa Barbara, Calif. May 1972 FROM HERE AND THERE: "NO EXCUSE" SUNDAY Some congregations have tried to combat the problem of low church attendance by offering a “No Excuse’’ Sunday. Why is it called that? Because on that particular Sunday there will be absolutely no excuse for your not attending church since there will be: 1. Cots in the back of the church for those who say that Sunday is their only day to sleep in. 2. Murine for those with eyes tired from watching TV too late on Saturday night. 3. Steel helmets for those who say, “The roof would fall in.’’ 4. Blankets for those who think the sanctuary is too cold and fans for those who think it is too hot. 5. Hearing aids for those who can’t hear the Pastor, and cotton for those who think he’s too loud. 6. Scorecards for listing the hypocrites present. 7. A portable TV for those who don’t want to miss their favorite program. 8. A trailer and tent for those who like weekend camping. 9. “Stamp out Stewardship” buttoms to be worn during the offering. 10. Some relatives for those who go visiting on Sunday. 11. A good selection of trees for those who enjoy the back country. 12. TV dinners for those who can’t go to church and cook dinner too. If these items do not deal with your excuse, please call any member of the Church Council, who will think of something just for you! — from the Presbyterian Newsletter of W. Pittston, Pennsylvania, courtesy of Penn Northeast Conference Newsletter, No. 146 (Feb. 1977) Ed’s Clipsheet — June 77 LET HIM GUIDE US Our trials and troubles are many As we journey along the way, But if only we believe in our Saviour He will guide us from day to day. He will guide us through sickness and sorrow, If we believe in our dear blessed Saviour. His presence will be with us tomorrow, If our faith in His name never wavers. So let us believe in Lord Jesus With reverence and prayer every day, Then joy will be with us forever As we journey along the way. — Gertrude Corinne Hanson The Parish Paper, Santa Barbara, Calif.
