CHRISTMAS GREETINGS On behalf of the Conference Council of our Calvin Synod, I greet you in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and wish you a truly enlightened Christmas season. God must be very fond of light. In the third verse of the Bible we read, “And God said, Let there be light: and there was light." Then when it came time for God to send His Son into the world which had become dark because of sin, Jesus said, “I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." Thus, when Jesus chose His disciples, He told them, “You are the light of the world... Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” The Father is light. Jesus the Christ is light. The Holy Spirit is light. We are light! Be, then, what you are: children of light, shining in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation as stars in the night. To paraphrase the words of Francis of Assisi: where there is hatred, be love; where there is injury, be pardon; where there is doubt, be faith; where there is despair, be hope; where there is sadness, be joy! Yes, where there is darkness, be light! In local, regional and all higher world communities, yes: even in our own congregations and Synod, there are many who are children of darkness sowing the seed of dissention, distrust, discord and destruction... Let this Christmas season be a renewing of the mind of Christ in our thinking and a cleansing of our lives by His pure presence. By a new courage to preach His Word of Peace and by a new fortitude to bear witness to His reconciling grace for all, let His light come to our darkened world through us. For it is still better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. ‘Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace at all times in all ways. The Lord be with you all!” (2. Thess. 3:16) Bishop John Butosi
