The next issue is planned to be published in September perhaps from Bridgeport! HAVE A RESTFUL SUMMER — RESTING IN HIM! * * * NEW UNITED CHURCH ANNUITY PLAN High on the “Top-Ten Summer Reading List’ of clergy and lay workers this summer is a 32-page booklet with a straight-forward title: “The New United Church Annuity Plan.” Why is this “hot-off-the-press” publication receiving such careful attention from our church leaders? Because long and careful study has resulted in vital improvements in the present U.C.C. annuity plans provided by churches and church-related agencies for their employees. Another reason is an October 31 deadline for members wishing to make certain elections affecting their retirement benefits. The elections are open to members who have not started to receive benefits. The changes are effective January 1, 1977. The new and improved plan for providing retirement benefits for U.C.C. personnel is another example of a support system that will provide more security for U.C.C. employees during both active and retirement years. Living costs that accelerate during retirement rob pension dollars of their purchasing power. The changes in the new pension program are designed to give members every inflation-fighting possibility for their pension dollars up to, and even, during retirement. The new Plan permits members to participate more directly in the investment results obtained by the clergy and laity Funds. The new Plan does this by permitting members to allocate portions of their contributions to a variable annuity account based on common stocks. Dues of members will “buy” Accumulation Units which are like shares in a mutual fund. This is an option available in addition to a traditional fixed-benefit plan. As a result, the Funds are able to credit actual performance to members during their active years of participation. The Funds for clergy and laity have used both variable and fixed investments in the past, but the new Plan permits members to tailor their own pre-retirement program through allocating future dues. Up to 75% of such required dues may be designated for the variable account. Existing accumulations of members in the Funds will be subject to partial allocation to variable accounts, with at least half required to be held in fixed accounts. This election also must be received by the Boards prior to October 31. Executive Vice President John D. Ordway met with staff members of U.C.C. Conferences to explain changes which will be effective January 1, 1977. Conference offices can furnish information about the Plan and additional copies of material for prospective new applicants. In several conferences, seminars will be held for present members of the Funds and others involved. The booklet discusses factors to be considered in making decisions regarding the elections which must be received by the Boards by October 31. Ed’s Clipsheet, Sept. ’76 )
