2 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD OFFICIAL COMMUNICATION The Rt. Rev. Dr. John Butosi 21 Lexington Avenue South Norwalk, Connecticut 06854 Tel. Res.: 203-838-7378 Bus.: 203-866-7809 GALLEY SLAVES SUNDAY will be observed on February 8, 1976 in accordance with the decision of our last Synod Meeting. All our congregations are urged to celebrate the freeing of our Galley Slave Ancestors 300 years ago. Our official church paper will print SPECIAL BULLETIN FOLDERS for the occasion; order them from Rev. Francis Vitéz ($3.00 per hundred). At the same time our churches are asked to have SPECIAL OFFERING for the support of the Galley Slave Memorial sponsored by the Presbyter’s Association. (Money should be sent to Synod Treasurer.) THE REF. CHURCH IN HUNGARY, through its official leadership, invited Bishop Butosi and a delegation of our Calvin Synod to participate in their Galley Slave Observances which will take place Feb. 9-14, 1976 in Debrecen, Hungary. REFORMED PEOPLE on the Eastern Seaboard are now planning a grand scale Celebration of the Galley Slaves on Oct. 31, 1976 in New York City. A representative task force prepares the event. THE CONFERENCE COUNCIL met on Dec. 2-4, 1975 in Cleveland, Ohio. Their important decisions include: (1) Traveling Fund Quota was raised to $150 as Synod raised the per mile reimbursement from 12 to 15 cents, but failed to act on providing resources in the budget. (2) Two candidates, the Revs. Marton Kerekes and Joseph O. Szirmai were examined, and upon recommendation received Privilege of Call as of Dec. 3, 1975. (3) Youth Camp Program was formulated on the theme of “Formation of Individual Christian Morality.” The date and place are unconfirmed yet, but extra efforts are made to send out invitations in February, 1976. (4) Amendment to the By-Laws is recommended as follows: “Conference Council recommends that By-Laws Article I/c last five lines which reads ‘shall be enrolled as an affiliate ministerial member of the Conference for the duration of that pastorate and during that period shall have the right of voice, but without vote’ be deleted and replaced by the following sentence: ‘may apply to this Conference for ministerial standing for the duration of that pastorate and during that period may have all the rights and privileges of such membership.’ ” (In conformity with E&R and UCC provisions.) (5) For the Erdély Diaspora Work treasurer was authorized to pay the full quota ($830.00) even if the designated special offering would not be sufficient. (6) Committee on Full-Time Bishop will not meet on Feb. 16 as indicated earlier inasmuch as TWO meetings of 16 persons would cost approximately $5,000.00 for which Synod Meeting failed to make provisions. But the Committee, under the co-chairmanship of Dr. S. Szabó and J. Nemesnyik, will meet on the first day of 1976 Synod Meeting (May 10) in Washington, D.C. The needed preparation will be made through mail. THE 1976 SYNOD MEETING most likely will be held at Wesley Theological Seminary, 4400 Massachusetts Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. from May 10 through 13. That would mean rooms, meals, lodging in a most beautiful environment, and at a much reduced price! STILL VACANT CHURCHES: (a) Coatesville, Pa. Bishop gives further information. (b) Gary, Ind. Rev.
