REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA 5 FORMER LIVING EDITORS OF CALVIN SYNOD HERALD—REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA Dr. S. Bessemer Rev. E. Vas vary Dr. L. Harangi Dr. S- Szabó 75th ANNIVERSARY OF THE CALVIN SYNOD HERALD—REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA The first Hungarian Reformed paper in America was the “Őrálló”, a weekly paper edited by Sándor Kallassay in New York in 1896. This paper survived for two years. In July, 1900, Zoltán Kuthy, a minister from New York, approached two of his colleagues, Elek Csutoros of Cleveland and Pál Konyha of Pittsburgh, to start a Hungarian Reformed paper. They agreed and each put in seventy dollars for the costs. Thus we have the very beginnings of the “Amerikai Magyar Reformátusok Lapja.” The first issue appeared in Cleveland on August 15, 1900 and was edited by Zoltán Kuthy. Editors of the paper were as follows: Zoltán Kuthy, 1900; Elek Csutoros, 1901; Sándor Kalassay 1901-1907; István Harsányi, Sándor Harsányi, 1917-1924; Mihály Tóth, 1924; Gyula Hankó, Ödön Vasváry, 1925-1926; Sámuel Horváth, 1926-1929; Dr. Géza Takaró, 1930; Dr. Gyula Melegh, 1930-1936; Árpád Bemáth, 1936-1938; Dr. Stephen Bessemer, 1938; Dr. Sándor Tóth, 1938- 1960; Dr. László Harangi, 1960-1963; Dr. Stephen Szabó, 1963-1968; Francis Vitéz, 1968 to the present time. The Paper was a weekly one until 1935, bi-weekly from 1935-1958, monthly from 1959-1973, and eight issues annually since 1974. The Paper at the start of publication was in private hands, then the Home Mission Board of the Reformed Church edited it, later between 1934-1963 it was financed by the Evangelical and Reformed Church and since 1963, it is solely owned by our Calvin Synod. From the time of inception until 1963 the paper was wholly Hungarian, from 1963-1968 it contained some English articles, and since 1968, it is half Hungarian and half English. Since October, 1971 the English portion appears in the front half of the Paper, the Hungarian section in the second half. Originally the name of the Paper was “Amerikai Magyar Reformátusok Lapja” but was later changed to just “Reformátusok Lapja.” In August, 1972 the Synod changed the name to read “Calvin Synod Herald—Reformátusok Lapja.” Since its origin, the Paper has been patronized by the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America. During the depression, one year’s expenses were underwritten by the printer, the late Aladár Fiók, Sr. For the past fifteen years, Pemco, Inc., Mr. William Köteles, president, has underwritten the cost of one issue per year. The Paper contains religious articles and literary works. It is the official organ of the Calvin Synod, but it serves not only its own members, but many Hungarian Reformed Americans, Hungarian Reformed people in diaspora as well as in Hungary. We express our thanks to all those who have helped the Paper for the past 75 years. We can be justly proud or our “Calvin Synod Herald—Reformátusok Lapja” as the oldest Hungarian Reformed Church paper in the entire world—including Hungary. Francis Vitéz Rev.
