2 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD GOING TO CHURCH Some go to Church to take a walk; Some go there to laugh and talk; Some go there to meet a friend; Some go there their time to spend; Some go there to see each other; Some go there a fault to cover; Some go there for speculation; Some go there for observation; Some go there to doze and nod; The wise go there to worship God. Selected. ”22 REASONS NOT TO GO TO CHURCH” 1. I have to cook Sunday dinner. 2. I work the rest of the week; Sunday is the only morning I can sleep. 3. Our children go for us. 4. I wasn’t brought up in church, so it’s too late to start now. 5. My husband (or my wife) is of a different religion. 6. I have no way of getting there: it’s too far. 7. I don’t believe in everything the church stands for. 8. I don’t like the people at church. 9. I don’t believe that you have to go to church to be a Christian. 10. I work Sundays. 11. I had to go when I was a kid; it turned me against going to church. 12. We have a summer place where we go weekends. 13. The church isn’t air-conditioned. 14. Our children are too young. 15. I can’t follow the minister’s sermons. 16. It costs money to belong to a church; I can’t afford it. 17. I don’t know anybody at the church; no one says hello to me. 18. I don’t have time for the church activities they want you to do. 19. We go skiing (boating, golfing, etc.) on Sundays. 20. Saturday night is “date night”; I just can’t get up Sunday morning. 21. I used to go regularly; maybe I’ll start again soon. 22. I’m getting too old to go to church. Good reasons? They sounded good to those who gave them. But let’s look at it another way. Would we give the same reasons if, instead of an invitation to God’s House, it was an invitation to a wedding reception? Or a world series game? Wouldn’t we find a way to go? One thing more: The millions of people who do worship God every Sunday have the same reasons not to. THE HOMEMAKER’S PRAYER Monday, Washday: Help me, my God, to wash away all my selfishness and vanity, that I may serve You with perfect humility through the week ahead. Tuesday, Ironing Day: Dear Lord, help me to iron out all the wrinkles of prejudice 1 have accumulated through the years, so that I may see the beauty in others. Wednesday, Mending Day: O God, help me to mend my ways, so that I will not set a bad example for others. Thursday, Cleaning Day: Lord Jesus, help me to reach the dust of all the many faults I have been hiding in the secret corners of my heart all these years. Friday, Shopping Day: O God, give me the grace to be a wise and prudent shopper that 1 may puchase eternal happiness for myself and my family and all who are in need of Your love. Saturday, Cooking Day: Help me, my Savior, to brety up a huge kettle of brotherly love and serve it with the clean sweet bread of human kindness. Sunday, The Lord’s Day: O God, since 1 have now prepared my house for you, please come into my heart, as my honored guest. * The country has grown so tense and nervous, it’s been years since you’ve seen anybody go to sleep in Church. * A person can accept not being worth his weight in gold. What’s shattering is finding you’re not even worth your weight in pork chops. “nodHERALDAI Reformátusok Lapja OffWel Organ Of The Calvin Synod - United Church of Christ Founded In 1900 V-------------------------------------------------August-September 1974 Volumne 74, No. 8-9 Published monthly except Aprll-May, June-July, August-September and October-November when bi-monthly.
