SALARY STUDY RELEASED BY THE PENSION BOARDS The 1972 salary study by The Pension Boards shows a slight increase in the average salary of United Church of Christ ministers. The 4,015 parish ministers who reported showed an average income of $9,861. This is $408 more than the previous year. The median is $9,329, an increase of $382. Wm. Kincaid Newman, executive vice president of The Pension Boards, recently reported these figures to the conference executives of the United Church of Christ. Additional figures show that the full 11 percent dues, recommended by General Synod and The Pension Boards, are being paid on behalf of 93 percent of the ministers reporting. This is up one percent over the previous year. The highest salary averages reported are in the Southwest $(11,207), California South $11,025), California North (10,944), and Connecticut ($10,876) Conferences. The study also showed that 38 pastors, among those reporting, are earning over $20,000 a year. There are 1,523 pastors whose salaries are between $10,000 and $20,000. Those earning between $5,000 and $10,000 number 2,334. Twenty-four pastors earn less than $5,000. “We hope,” said Mr. Newman, “this data will help our conference ministers to improve the salaries of clergymen.” A.D.
