Dr. Szabó Honored Our sincere congratulations to Dr. Stephen Szabó, pastor of our First church in Cleveland on the occasion of his 25th Anniversary as minister of the church, on October 15, 1972. We, in Synod, are grateful to God for his work, his ministry and his life both to his congregation and to our Calvin Synod. Rev. Antal Installed The Rev. Arthur Antal was installed as pastor of our Johnstown, Windber and Vintondale, Pa. congregations on December 3, 1972 by the Deputy- Bishop, the Reverend Aaron Elek. We pray for God’s blessing on both pastor and people. Rev. Varkonyi Resigns After more than 50 years in the ministry, the Rev. Nicholas Varkonyi resigned as pastor of our Miami church effective October 1, 1972. He has served our Hungarian background churches faithfully and well. Most of his pastorates were small churches and usually in great difficulty. He considered it his mission in life to save and build-up these oft-times struggling churches. Since he was bilingual he made a most profound impact on the second and third generations. He will be missed by us all. We thank God for his faithfulness and his love for our people and our faith. Seminary Student Fund Established The Rev. G. Nishimoto of the Council for Church and Ministry reported that the Student Aid program of the United Church of Christ is being phased out except for aid to black students. Synodical Council voted to establish a Synodical Student Fund to aid seminary students. Florida Church Status Our Synodical Council voted at its September 6, 1972 meeting in Ligonier, Pa. to grant status to the Hungarian Church of Reformation, Miami, Florida and to it’s pastor, the Rev. John Paul Nagy. The Florida church voted on November 5, 1972 to join our Synod but with certain conditions regarding both pastor and congregation; thus null and voiding the Synodical Council of September 6, 1972. Subsequently, the Florida church voted to remain “independent”. Belgian Pastor to Visit The Rev. Andrew Pandy of Brussels, Belgium is planning a visit to our country in May or June.
