9. szám - KALMÁR JÁNOS: A Duna-zárólánc a XVI. századból

BUDAPEST ILLUSTRATED HISTORICAL AND SOCIAL REVIEW PUBLISHED BY THE CITY OF BUDAPEST THE EIGHT HUNDRED YEAR OLD MOSCOW Zoltán Tildy, President of the Republic, opened the magnificent exhibition of the Hungaro-Soviet Cultural Society on August 5th in the National Museum. The immense volume of photographs in the five rooms was an overwhelming experience for the visitors, but it is also a decisive proof. It is a decisive proof of the vital power, the desire of construction and the faith in work of the Soviet people. Like a kaleidoscope, the photographs of the exposition present to the visitors the unshakeable determination of the inhabitants of Moscow their love of work slackening not even during the critical years of war and their will of construction, followed at the time of the beginning of peace by enthusiasm and élan with which this people began the reconstruction of the country. Int the first room we see the development of Moscow in the course of the past centuries. Photographs of old paintings and engravings present Moscow of old times, the heart of the huge empire. On the pictures of the XVt h century there appears already the portrait of the gigantic building of the Kreml. (Pictures of A. Vasnecov.) The pictures of the inner rooms show us the life of Moscow today. Many photographs give an account of the wonderful development of Moscow showing rapid progress on the way towards the realization of a better, finer and more human life. The development of Moscow of today is characterized everywhere by rationality and efficiency. The magnificent buildings erected a few years ago of the Stalin Water-Works made continental Moscow the sea-port of three seas : White Sea, Baltic Sea and Caspian Sea. The underground was constructed with amazing speed and the up-to-date trafficsystem of the Metropolis of near to five million inhabitants was built in the course of a few years. The comfortable cars, the scrupulously clean, wellaired, huge stations of the Metro of Moscow are unparalleled in the whole grand world. After the photographs of the building of the modern Hotel Moscow and of the work of the industrial establishments of Moscow the visitor passes into the third room, where he is able to get acquainted with the scientific life of Moscow. Scientific institutions, universities and academies play a great role in the life of the Capital. There are many photographs presenting the life of the Accademy of Sciences, the supreme leader and depository of Soviet scientific life. The life of theatre and art in Moscow with their magnificent old traditions is also amply dealt with in the exposition. We witness theatrical performances and those of the State Opera giving us deep artistic sensation, and we see the photographs of the perfect dance and ballet culture and we see glimpses of the people of Moscow at play. The museums and expositions of Moscow are presented to us in testimony of the fact that the people of Moscow have ample share not only in work but also of culture. This long-expected and very instructing exposition which rendered good services in deepening the relations of the Soviet and the Hungarian people, ends by the presentations of the up-to-date hygienic equipment of high level of Moscow, of the sporting life of Moscow as well as of the social establishments of the workers.
