Hungarian specialities X BUDAPEST, IV., RÉGIPOSTA-UTCA 5 Távbeszélő: 189-075 BUDAPEST ILLUSTRATED HISTORICAL AND SOCIAL REVIEW PUBLISHED BY THE CITY OF BUDAPEST THE FIRST STEAM-DRIVEN RAILWAY IN HUNGARY The Hungarian State Railways are to-day celebrating the one hundredth anniversary of the day when the first steam-driven train was placed in public service in Hungary. Hungary was quick to recognise the importance of the new means of communication after the inauguration in England of the Stockton-Darlinton railway service. Prompted by this development, the National Assembly, that had continually attempted to improve transport facilities ever since the end of the XVIII. century, drafted the terms of the first laws relating to the establishment of railway services. This lead, in 1836, to the promulgation of the law itself which envisaged the construction of thirteen main lines and empowered associations, companies or private individuals to construct railway lines. Three firms were granted concessions. The first planned the construction of a line between Pozsony and Nagyszombat ; the second intended to construct a railway line between Vienna and Győr, but the scheme never materialised while the third, — the Hungarian Central Railway Company —- conceived a plan for the construction of a railway line linking Pest to the Austrian frontier and the provincial town of Debrecen to the Hungarian capital. Work on this stretch of line began and, on July 15th - 1846, the first steam-driven train was placed into public service on the line between Pest and Vác. Hungary thus was the tenth country on European continent to inaugurate a system of steam-driven trains, and the twelfth amongst all the countries of the world. The purpose of this article is to inform the reader of the operations of this railway company, the difficulties that had to be overcome and the success with which the scheme was crowned. The illustrations, which deal with the life of the railway in question endeavour to pay tribute to the one hundredth anniversary of the existence of a railway in Hungary. Kálmán Király HUNGARIAN ART-TREASURES ABROAD After many years of intense work and research, it has proved possible to trace some of the most valuable artistis treasures originating from Hungary and now scattered in many parts of the world. First place amongst these must be given to the flagellum used by the Blessed Margaret of the House of Árpád, now in the Stephans Kirche in Vienna and to the richly decorated tomb-stone of St. Ivo, an even more important artistic from the same period, in the Louannec Church in Britanny. Two relics of inestimable value are associated with the name of Emperor Sigismund, namely the so-called «Mauritius-Schwert» in the Weltliche Schatzkammer in Vienna and the História Naturalia, the work of Martinus Opifex, in the University Library at Granada. Mention must be made of the beautiful regalia, similar in design and execution, to the Matthias Corvinus Calvary at Estergom, in the Dom at Essen. One of the halls in the Fortress at Salzburg is understood to be a faithful copy of a room in King Matthias Corvinus palace in Buda According to Eric Maclagan, the wellknown British expert, the Verrochio altar and the bronze relief of Alexander the v k9iábhegyi (Siabadságltegyi) Szanatórium BUDAPEST, XII., MELINDA ST. 16 (EDEN) * CHIEF-MEDICAL: DR.
