throughout the spring and summer to provide beautiful flower boxes, which are displayed on our patios. Cookouts are always a hit during the summer months and are widely attended by our families. It is a tradition to hold a pig roast at the end of each summer when residents and volunteers enjoy dressing up in Hawaiian costumes. Several years ago, the Activity Department was blessed to receive a donation from the Mellon Foundation to help purchase hand bells for our residents. Since that time, the residents have formed a bell choir and perform throughout the year for special programs such as our Live Nativity, Easter and Thanksgiving. The residents that participate in these programs enjoy providing the gift of music and song to those who are unable to participate themselves. This gives them a sense of accomplishment and self worth. One of the most popular activities this past year was the renewal of wedding vows among two of our residents Andy ad Evelyn Aitken. The activities that week were designed to go with the wedding theme. There was even a bachelor party and bridal shower. As the week concluded, the wedding ceremony and reception were held with many friends and family members of the couple. A most enjoyable time was shared among our residents and staff. This past holiday season, a large percentage of our residents and families enjoyed going on a sleigh ride which was held on the grounds of the Bethlen Home. Although there was no snow, it was a beautiful afternoon enjoyed by all. The “Presents for Patients” project held each year encourages families, friends and community members to sponsor residents for the holiday season with a gift from their wish list. This past year, the residents were blessed to receive beautiful Christmas gifts from their sponsors. The looks upon their faces when they received their gifts was priceless. Many “THANKS” to all the families and friends of the Bethlen Home for making this program such a great success throughout the years. Volunteers are a vital part of our nursing home. During the year, they provide love and support to our residents as well as staff. The residents look forward to their weekly visits and smiling faces. Each year, the Bethlen Home honors its volunteers for their services and dedication with a luncheon and awards program during National Volunteer Recognition Week held in April. 41
