Hurricane Floyd - September 17,1999 When God destroyed the world by the greatest flood known to man, He made a promise to never destroy the entire world again by a flood. He has kept His promise. True, from time to time He has sent great floods to many parts of the world, but His promise remains constant. Last week, Hurricane Floyd visited my town of Manville, New Jersey, and I have never personally seen such devastation of personal property in my life. One section of the town called “Lost Valley” has about 300 homes, all were under water, and the area was cut off from the rest of the town. After the water receded, every street was lined with furniture, refrigerators, etc. to be picked up. Across the other end of the town, the same devastated picture. My home was spared with not a drop of water in my basement, but across from my home, every basement was under water. My brother lives three blocks from me, and the street there was like a river. I had to go by rowboat to take some food to him. No one was able to go out of town or come into town. 1 went to the Manville Reformed Church on Sunday, listened to an uplifting sermon, and never heard a negative word of complaint in spite of the losses they suffered. The church basement was under water and everything was lost. In the kitchen just about everything was destroyed. The parsonage was under water, everything gone. The people exhibited a strong faith and trust in God. We will rebuild with God’s help. I was indeed privileged to see a “miracle” as the members of this small church held fast to their faith, trust and hope in God. After church they went home, changed into their work clothes and went about helping each other. The following Sunday I attended my church in New Brunswick, New Jersey. I related the Manville situation. I reminded them that this was our “sister church.” Let us hold them in our prayers but also help them with our donations so that they can rebuild. What a wonderful reminder of the “Golden Rule” - do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Esther M. Kormondi Member of Branch 302 27
