The Bethlen Home

vant. What the sinful, wretched world needed was not another hero of great victories, but the Son of God who healed the sick, fed the hungry, clothed the destitute, and wiped the tears of the lonely, the friendless, the poorest of the poor. On that last, unforgettable night before His suffering on the Cross, He washed the feet of his disciples, and said: “I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.” (John 13:15) For us, fellow servants of Jesus at the Bethlen Home, this word of our Master is not some pious, allegorical poetry, or another “recommendation” of an ecclesiastic committee. It is THE rule, THE way of life, THE supreme consideration, and everything else must be subordinate to it. Because, as the apostle continues, “He humbled Himself, and was obedient.” The only acceptable fashion, the only attitude blessed by God: humility and obedience in all our care for those who came here to add life to their remaining years among us. An herein speaks the Spirit of Ligonier to all who have the heart to hear it. Excerpts from the sermon at the Rally Day Picnic of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America on July 19, 1998 33
