Bethlen Almanac 1998 (Ligonier)
New York-i Egyházmegye
A welcome luncheon was held for Pastor Les Martin and his wife, Linda in May of 1998. Friends and members of the church and of the community joined together to enjoy an afternoon of good food and Christian fellowship. In June, members of the congregation met with the 21 st Century Committee of the American Hungarian Reformed Presbyters’ Association. We found the open discussion to be enlightening. We will continue discussions about the future of our church and begin to plan for the next century. Our Chief Elder Linda Hauck and Treasurer, Helen Cutler represented the church at the Presbyters’ Conference in Ligonier, PA on Labor Day weekend. A full report of church activities was given. On October 17, 1998, we hosted the meeting of the New York Classis. Fifteen people attended the meeting which was very successful. A delicious luncheon was prepared and served by the women of the church. Our 1998 calendar of events included 4 Chinese auctions, annual bazaar, Hungarian picnic, kolbász making and an annual Christmas party. In October, we celebrated Homecoming Sunday. Movies taken during the late 1940’s/early 1950’s were shown for the very first time. More recent video of picnics and Christmas parties were also shown. We saw many of our relatives and friends making kolbász and csiga noodles. The highlight was a 1952 mock wedding called, “Tom Thumb Wedding”, performed by the Sunday School children. Pastor Martin entertained us playing his guitar and singing folk and pop music. We all sang along, too! We thank the Lord for His love and guidance as we continue to worship together herein our Hungarian Reformed Church of Staten Island. We cordially invite everyone to come visit us in Staten Island to see our beautiful church and to enjoy the Christian fellowship we share. Eleanor L. Szász, Secretary Linda Hauck, Chief Elder 123
