My Years with the Federation by William (Balint) Szuch My wife Helen and I are both proud 2nd generation American Hungarians from Leechburg and Sharon, Pennsylvania respectively. Helen’s parents came from Erdély and my parents came from the Szikszó region of Hungary. As youngsters we were both raised in the Hungarian Reformed faith. We grew up attending Sunday School, summer church school and youth groups. It was then that we were taught the Bible and how to read and write in Hungarian. We later participated in various church related activities such as: Elder, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Sunday School teacher, Secretary of Lorántffy Zsuzsanna Nőegylett and summer school instructor. Helen and I were introduced to the HRFA by our parents as they strongly believed in Hungarian Reformed fratemalism. That introduction planted the seeds that grew into a 43-year career. In 1952 Tusai Mihály, the Pittsburgh District Manager, approached me and I became an agent. When Branch 67 needed a manager, Helen and I decided as a team that we could contribute and grow HRFA fratemalism in the area. Mr. Tusai came to Sharon several times to instruct us and to develop selling skills. He was an excellent teacher and a very skilled professional. Alex Csik and Joe Molnár, Jr. also worked and developed our fraternal insurance skills. When Alex came for a visit or to discuss insurance, the coffee pot had to be on and then the real work would begin. William (Balint) and Helen Szuch. 253 I
