PASSAIC, NY Pastor: Marianna Király Hungarian Reformed Church The past year was one of the church’s most trying ever but one which tested its deep roots and revealed its real strength. With a growing rift between the pastor and the members, and despite the counsel to him of the Synod’s officers, the minister filed a legal suit against the church and its officers as well as the Synod and its officers. When the Consistory felt it was necessary to end the pastor’s services to the church, a special congregational meeting was held which affirmed the decision to terminate the pastorate. Although the minister was also suspended by the Synod, he refused to vacate the parsonage requiring future legal action by the church for eviction and for recovery of an unpaid loan to him. The matters were still in the court at year’s end with further action by the Synod in process. Recognizing the Lord was their strength, the congregation gathered itself together and attendance at worship soon increased. After service by a number of Christ’s ministers, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Dezső Ábrahám began to conduct the English and Hungarian services faithfully every Sunday, bringing stability and healing in the church. Looking forward, plans for the 100th Anniversary in 1995 were developed, as were planning for important improvements and renovations to its Calvin Hall. With head held high, the church continued to take part in local Classis and Synod activities. Its Chief Elder, Mr. Joe Sonye serves on the Synod’s Church and Ministry Committee. Throughout the year the Consistory was joined in work for the the church by The Calvin Adult Fellowship and the 177
