This has recharged the morale of our students and teachers tremendously. It has also forced our congregation to squarely face our own shortcomings in evangelism and youth work. The verdict is not yet in. and the fallout has not yet settled. But now we have begun to think about our first-ever Vacation Bible School this summer. Our total membership has gone below 150. Our finances are a con­stant problem. We are definitely a struggling church. Yet our worship attendance has been slightly increasing every year! It is confusing, and we constantly juggle feelings of joy and celebration with fear for the future of our church. Perhaps most congregations will face greater and greater struggles as our surrounding culture gets more and more anti- Christian. It has been so easy to be a Christian in America, so easy to have a church. But our environment is declaring itself dead-set against the Laws of God. It is hard on the church, yet the struggle just might deepen our common faith and sanctify our joy. As the fearful future looks darker and darker, more delighted are we by the light of Jesus’ coming.
