The past year has been busy for the members of the Whiting Hungarian Reformed Church. In terms of our building, we have just finished ten years of major remodeling of the church; each year we have taken on a new task and seen it to completion. While this involves great expense and time on the part of the church members, one of the reasons for a ten year project is that our members take pride in their church. This pride is, in many ways, a reflection of the pride our people feel in their community. Whiting continues to be a vibrant community, and the congregation is part of the ongoing renewal that the community feels. A part of this renewal is also shown in the attitude of the people of the congregation. Church attendance averages over fifty percent, in the last two years five adults have become part of our fellowship who weren’t with us previously, and our Sunday School program began again. Cathy Rozek, one of our organists, re-started the program last year; as she became a new mother this past year, during the current year our church Secretary (who is herself a young mother), Deanna Taylor, took the reins of leadership with the children. Since our last publication in the almanac we have had three baptisms; Eric Steven Peterson, son of Mark and Janellen Peterson, and Kathryn Elizabeth Rozek, daughter of Mark and Cathy Rozek; thus both of our organists are new mothers; and Jessica Taylor, daughter of Steve and Deanna Taylor, so both of our Sunday School teachers are also “new” mothers! During the past year our improvements to the church included insulation of our attic, repair and replacement of our windows in the bell tower, major renovation of our heating system, electrifying the stained glass windows in the sanctuary, renovation of an annex to the sancturay, completion of carpeting in the sancturay and the balcony, and remodeling of the washrooms. Most of the labor for these projects was donated by church members. For the beautification of our sanctuary we received a painting of the “Praying Hands” in memory of a longtime faithful member, Sue Gyure, and we purchased a new set of the Evangelical and Reformed “Hymnals”. We had to bury one of our long time members, John Gyure; but the spirit of our old members lives on in our community as the next generation continues where the old left off; our Reformed Spirit does not die, it continues to grow. This Fall we had occasion to celebrate; we rejoiced that our current pastor and the congregation could work together for ten years, by the Lord’s Grace. Joining with us at the celebration were our own local western classis pastors, several local Roman Catholic clergy, and Bishop John Butosi from Connecticut. We realize that our membership is “small” compared to many con
