Imre A. Bertalan: Ethel Rose Molnár

1984 251 the highlites of Etel’s life, but each of us here today could add so many personal experiences. We remember piano-music and swimming; embroidery class and Bible Study; we remember special greeting cards; delicous calces and pastries that were eaten quickly. We remember exciting seminars in which young and old were challenged to grow; we remember youth retreats and adult conferences. We remember an open home and warm hospitality. We remember comfort and strength in times of need. Ethel traveled both in this country and in Europe. She met national leaders in Germany; our first family, other political leaders in Washington; she met actors, actresses in Cincinnati; she met church leaders throughout our country. But, despite all the travel, all the contacts made with famous people; despite all the opportunities presented to her, she came back home to Toledo, and through the vehicles of high school chemistry, scouting and Christian Education, she devoted herself to her kids — the youth in this city. Ethel devoted more than 30 years to scouting, nearly 40 years to teaching in the public schools, and over 50 years to teaching in Christ’s Church. She tauhgt principals of knowledge; she shared principles of faith. ... These last several years of Ethel’s life were perhaps the hardest she’s had. In addition to the normal challenges of lifestyle and responsibility changes that retirement brings on, Ethel was faced with an added challenge; her battle against the dreaded disease of cancer. Her friends and loved ones watched as she won the first round and then the second. And when the third round began, we shared the feeling of hope that she would beat back the cancer again. But somehow during that 3rd round Ethel realized that this time it would be different. ... During the days just before her death, her prayers were for those who would continue on in her ministry to the young people ... when even opening her eyes was difficult, she smiled broadly at the news that a friend’s grandchild was preparing to enroll in church school... In her final hours, she reached out to thank those who were maintaining the vigil with her; a peace descended upon her; and the Savior came. It is this faith, Ethel’s faith, and her victory that we celebrate on this day. It is with love that we bid her farewell and it is with love that she will be remembered. Amen. Imre A. Bertalan
