Kálvin Egyházkerület

1983 125 A detroiti első magyar református gyülekezet és lelkipásztora attrition and in the face of urgent demands for building renovation, the congregation finally decided to sell its church properties. The sale was consummated in December, 1981 when the new owners — Second Zion Hope Missionary Baptist Church — took possession of the properties. Fortunately, the congregation, now without a church, was able to make arrangements to share facilities of the First Hungarian Evangelical and Lutheran Church, located at 8141 Thaddeus Street, Detroit, a short distance away from the old church. Our Lutheran brothers welcomed us in true Christian fashion, and we now have regular Sunday Services beginning at 9:30 a.m., while our Lutheran brothers have their own separate services at 11:00 a.m. The facilities being somewhat smaller than at the “old” church, our social activities have been curtailed to a degree. However, our faithful Ladies Aid Society, under the leadership of Mrs. Stephen Deak, President, continue the tradition of being the principal driving force when it comes to raising funds for the church budget. This they accomplish by bake sales and dinners throughout the year. Without their support it is difficult to imagine how we could maintain our existence. Though small in numbers, we feel our congregation has a divine mission to fulfill in this aging community. And, while problems beset us from ever)' side, we take comfort from the words of St. Paul, the Apostle, who said: “We know that all things work together for good to them that love God, even to them who are the called according to his purpose. If God be for us, who can be against us?”
