Bethlen Almanac

BETHLEN ALMANAC 155 POUGHKEEPSIE, New York During the last two years we have celebrated two remarkable anniversaries. We remembered the 50th year of our Congregation and the 25th anniversary of the Church building in 1958, while in 1959 we held the 25th anniversary of the Women’s Guild. For both occasions we had a thanksgiving service followed by a supper. The Bishop of our Church, the Rt. Rev. Beky and Dean Gabor Csordás have been our most honored guests at both occasions. Church attendance is very satisfactory, although there are some who come only on the great holy days. There is a slight decrease in the participation in the Lord’s Supper. Our Church Council and Women’s Guild work together in close cooperation for the better future of our Church. The Church Council consists of 15 elders, headed by the pastor and Mr. Eugene Barath the Chief Elder, and the Women’s Guild has 29 members. Mrs. Paul Duzs is the president of the Women’s Guild. We conduct a Hungarian School on Saturdays from September till June, while a Sunday School education is given on Sundays. The Hungarian language instruction is given by the pastor and the teachers of the Sunday School are Magda Csontos and Vilma Duzs. Our Church edifice is in very good condition. We have no debts, but also no parsonage. We paid our denominational and charity quotas. We publish a Congregational Magazine. We had 1 baptism, 2 weddings and 2 burials. Women’s Association of the Hungarian Reformed Church in Poughkeepsie. PEEKSKILL, New York This small Congregation, owns a beautiful church edifice and plans to celebrate its 55th anniversary in 1960.
