8 olda, B É R M K á S 1936 julius 11. Junior Column People I know m. How do you like this idea of telling who is who in this column? My intentions in writing this kind of stuff was not to give any wrong impressions of Juniors, but merely to tell who they are and what they do etc. Mary Feczko for instance thinks this kind of stuff is horrible. Dot Elo says it’s good, Maurice West az usual is Silent, Billy Feczko is in a fog as to who could be writing this column, (me too sometimes.) Rose Nagy thinks I’m “Junior” and as usual she never says a surplus word, Betty Kluck is not certain if it’s me or not, maybe after I write something about her she’ll form an opinion, Irvin J. Du Vernay, who thinks he’s the author of this column since he’s been accused of writing it so often, is hardly ever able to express himself because he’s too busy denying that he wrote this, Ossie is too busy studing the weather to say what he tinks and so on down the line . . . But how about the rest of the JWU? How do you like the columns, any suggestions to make, any objections, or what? Just write to the Editor of the Jr. Column and tell her what you think, your letter will be published and maybe we can write it as you would like it. I know that Mary wants it written with moere Tact, that Dot wants it as it comes, etc. but how about YOU? What is your opinion? Write to the Editor and give her your opinion on the subject or subjects. Writing this column is no joke and if it is not to the readers I wont write it anymore and will write on other subjects. So don’t fail to express your opinion. Before deciding what to do, we will interview Junior and try to give our honest opnion of him. Irvin J. Du-Vernay as he so often sings his name is one or the oldest Juniors ever seen, there is a debate as to whether he is the oldest or Irene Rosenbaum in the Local but all that can be settled in a moment because Bruno Reich- ardt, the instructor, is with out a doubt the oldest in the Local. Junior writes letters with a stinging tinge, writes articles for the Industrial Worker, and Industrialist! YPS that are sometimes good and sometimes fair. He would write more but thinks that he doesn’t know enough and hides behind this excuse. He always greets Mary with a “Hello Toots” that she likes so much. He seldom is serious in a meeting and devotes most of his time to Kibbitzing where in Rose is sure to say “What are you looking at me like that for.” Most of his jokes (?) are rehasned radio style but he laughs even if no one else racks a smile. Some of the Juniors think he’s a little loose up top (so do we.) Generally, when fellow worker Reichardt is tring to start a discussion among the group, Junior is the first to get up and pop off, not ala Tor Ce- dervall, but ala I wish I hadn’t heard you. On Monday night he is found in the Industrial Workers School Economic Class, on Tuesday He is in an IWW or GDC meeting, on Wednesday he is in the Labor Journalism Class, and Thursday he is Treasurer of the Art Class, Friday he’s teasing Mary, at the JWTU meeting, Saturday he is usually at a dance, and Sunday he is in the Public Speaking Class in the afternoon and the Lectures at night. His time is taken up quite well and we hope the Journalism and Public Speaking classes will improve him plenty, he needs improvement. Eh . . . Junior? “Don’t ya Like it Eh . . .? This is his favorite saying and he’ll be bending ears with the same line for the next couple of years when he may learn a new line. “Don’t ya like it . . . Eh . . .? JULIUS 19-én, a 79, 80, 89 és 99-ik osztályok közös nyári ünnepélye a P. P. Kricken. JULIUS 26-ÁN, vasárnap Powhaton Point, O. a 174-ik osztály piknik keretében tartja jubileumi ünnepélyét. Több osztálynál még nem határoztak a dátum felett, mig sok helyütt az őszi hónapokban tartják azt meg. He dances something like Mary and thinks he’s “Walzing in a Dream” especially when he dances with Irene. He doesn’t seem to care for any particular flame but is always hanging around one or more. He hates to give out cigarettes but never fails to “bum” one when he ’s short which is not too seldom. He is branch secretary of the IWW branch at 94 Fifth Avenue but only because no one else wants the priveledge. I wonder why? Irvin carries a pencil on his ear quite alot and he has a pair that could carry more than just a pencil. He is from New Orleans and still has trouble pronouncing his “R”s, instead of saying Fellow Workers He says “Fellow Woiker,” and “Foist” for First. So this is “Junior” in a nutshell and maybe Mary Feczko can find more to tell about him. Will you, Mary? I know she would like to have him in a nutshell and crack down on him. Well here’s hoping, Mary. We’ll take a rest while YOU express your opinion on this column and will anxiouslly await the results. Sorry Dot, Irving, Rima, Irene, and the rest of you Juniors that we didn’t kno wyou well enough to write a column about you so far, but if the Juniors want this kind of material continued, they’ll have to say so, and then we’ll dig up some dope on youse. Okay Toots, and the rest? Once more we sink back into our Solitude of the Silenced Pen. When the leaves come out we’ll take this column back from “the Assistant Reporter” and fire away. Oh Buddy! Vigyázzunk a szemünkvilága épségére A szemek megerőltetése, a szembejok leggyakoribb fajtája. Ez többnyire fejfájásként nyilvánul meg először és ha elhanyagoljuk, komolyabb zavarokat idézhet elő. Számtalan gyermek “gyenge látás” miatt nem képes tanulmányaival normális mértékben haladni. Ezen megállapítás egy nemrégiben New York városában megtartott vizsgálat folyamán nyert megerősítést, amennyiben 250.000 iskolásgyermek között 28.000 gyermeket találtak, akiknek normális fejlődését és előhaladását gyenge szemek, vagy elégtelen látás hátráltatták. A szemek megvédését illetőleg több aprólékosnak tűnő dolgot kell figyelembe vennünk, így példul, sosem olvassunk újságot, vagy könyvet, aminek lapját napfény vakítja. Munka vagy olvasás közben kissé forduljunk el a fénytől, de arra is ügyeljünk, hogy a könyvet, vagy munkánk tárgyát árnyék ne borítsa. A legmegfelelőbb fény a napfény, aminek értékével, egészségi szempontból, semmiféle mesterséges fény sem veheti fel a versenyt. Sok ember kénytelen mesterséges fényt alkalmazni. Ha tehát mesterséges fény mellett dolgozunk, vagy olvasunk, tartsuk szem előtt, hogy a túl erős fény épp oly ártalmas, mint a túl gyenge világítás. Amellett a fény legyen állandó és ne rezegjen, valamint a tárgy, vagy a könyv, amivel épp foglalkozunk, ne mozogjon előttünk, vagy a kezünkben. A szemet pihentetni kell, épp ezért ajánlatos néha olvasás közben is fel tekinteni, vagy a szemet néhány pillanatra becsukni. Előfordul, hogy anyák elhalasztják a szemüveg beszerzését, mert nem akarják a gyermeket már fiatal korában ezzel “elcsúfítani.” Mondanunk sem kell, hogy ez mennyire helytelen álláspont. Ha a szülő utasítást kap az iskolai hatóságtól, a gyermek szemeinek megjavítását illetőleg, úgy gondolkodás nélkül kell a gyermeket egy szemorvos és optikus által megvizsgáltatni és az előirt szemüveget beszerezni. Ha baj van a szemünkkel, vagy látásunk gyenge, azonnal forduljunk egy szemorvoshoz és az optikushoz. Ne vásároljunk szemüveget vizsgálat nélkül, vagy azért mert olcsó. Számtalan ember tette tönkre szemeit olcsó, megnem felelő szemüvegekkel. Az a tény, hogy olcsó szemüveggel jobban látunk, mint szemüveg nélkül, még nem jelenti azt, hogy az a szemüveg a legmegfelelőbb.
