8 oldal BÉRMUNKÁS 1936 május 9. junior Column The inventor and the machine Nagy sikere volt a Háború tükre előadásának Clevelandon Once upon a time, there was an inventor; A very clever inventor too, because when his wife complained of too much housework, he invented gadgets to relieve her houshold tasks. His children wanted new toys so he made some new and more fascinating ones. All the people in the little village where he lived admired him for his cleverness. • , This inventor was quite contented with his lot until an old sage who traveled village to village happened to coma to his house. The sage told him that would be a far greater man if he would invent to help his fellow men. When the savage left, the inventor got to thinking. After many hours of deep thought, he finally decided upon something that would be beneficial to the world at large. He would invent something that would do everybody’s work: Now, this little village was peculiar an that its only manufacture was that of ash trays; handsomely decorated, copper ash trays. These were made by hand by all the men of the village and then exported to be sold. It was a very profitable business, for the ten cent stores in the United States had a standing order for 40.00 ash trays a year.The money that they brought was equally divided in the village because all the men made the same amount of ash trays. After months of steady work, the inventor finished his machine. It was a punch press that would stamp out copper ash trayd exactly like those the men of the laboriosly beat and carved out by hand. He felt very happy for had he not made a machine to relieve his fellow man of drudgery? By some means or other, an “unscrupulous individual” in the village managed to get hold of this machine. He set the machine up, made many ash trays quickly, and sent them to America to fill the 10 cent store’s order. So naturally, the other men couldn’t sell their handmade ash trays when that month’s quota was filled. This was a serious state of affairs as their livelihood practically depended on their selling the ash trays. And no one knew what to do about it as no situation like this had arisen before. Quite helpless they were. The inventor realized that he was the cause of the village’s unemployment so he, in desperation, went in search of the old sage to seek his advice. Fin- nally, in a little hut, he found the wise man. Said the old man after hearing the story, “my son, it is very strange that one man alone seems to have your whole village in his power.” The inventor replied that this “unscrupulous individual” was stronger than any one else in the village. “Yes,” said the sage, “hut not stronger than fifty of you.” Greatly enlightened, the inventor went home organized a gang of men, took possession of the machine, and ran the “unscrupulous individual” out of town on a rail. But the problem was not settled yet. Some of the villagers wanted to destroy the Machine as they thought that it had caused all the trouble. But the inventor had a better plan. Instead of each man working eight hours a day, they would take turns running the Machine in two hour shifts. In this manner, every one would do an equal amount of work. Their spare time could be spent in recreation and education. The quota would still be filled each month and every person would get the same amount of money for their ash trays as when they worked eight hours a day. — And everybody lived happily ever after. The above story illustrates the theory of machines and mass production very nicely. Most people stupidly think that the Machines are the cause for unemployment and living conditions. This is a very absurd conception. Machines are a great boon to society if put into the proper hands — our hands. As it is, in the capitalist’s hands, it is as great a menace to civilization as when in the “unscrupulous individual’s hands. The old sage in the story had the right idea about strength being in union, so don’t cry “smash the machines,” instead say “smash the capitalists.” J. S., of Detroit* COMMENT: J. Egy esztendővel ezelőtt a “Kik a bűnösök” cirnü színdarabot irta meg, amely sok magyar városban került bemutatásra és mindenütt nagy sikert aratott. A “Háború tükre” egy újabb munkás drámája Pika Pálnak, amely vasárnap este került bemutatásra a Cleveland West Side csoport rendezésében. A Lorain avenuei Turn Hall nagy néző terének minden ülése el volt foglalva és sokan az emeleti ülőhelyekre kerültek. Már az első felvonás meghódította a közönséget özvegy Ká- dárné esetében, aki egyetlen fiától és kenyérkeresőjétől kénytelen elválni a fiú háborúba vonulása miatt. “Proletár anyák, ezért szültök gyermeket?” jajkiáltással tiltakozik a megtört asszony a rendszer ellen. özvegy Kádárné szerepét Csorba Lászlóné játszotta mindvégig igazi rátermetséggel. György, a fia, Schwarzenber- ger Miklós volt, aki jelét adta hogy a szerepét tökéletesen át- érezi. György menyasszonya, majd felesége szerepében Herczeg Anna komoly feladatra vállalkozott, mert hiszen nagy ellenszenvet váltott ki a nézőtérén a halottnak hitt férj édesanyjának a lakásából való kiutasításával. Annus értékét éppen az bizinyitja, hogy ezt a szerepet is ügyesen, tökéletesen megjátszotta. Fridrich István háborús anyagokat szállító gyárost Vásárhelyi János, Sörös irodaszolgát Buzay János játszották teljes megértéssel. Sörös felesége, az öreg Kádárné szomszédja, akinek a tudta nélkül a házban semmi sem történik, a hirt hozó és hirt vivő szerepét a fiatal Herczeg Aranka tökéletesen játszotta meg. A többi szerepekben kitűnőek voltak Menyhárt Sándorné, Tomási Gizella, Beischlag Mátyás, Hámborszki Endre, Kop- csó Károly, Andráscsik János és Tóth Károly. A megemlékezések végére hagytuk Tomási Károlyt, aki ezt a kitűnő bemutatást rendezte olyan gondossággal, amilyenhez Tomási Károlytól szokva vagyunk. A súgó nem könnyű munkáját Nagy Károly végezte.
