Junior Column New York Building Strike The members rejected the award even though it was a great improvement for thous­ands of workers, and called for a general strike of all of­fice, loft and apartment build­ings. The niotion was seconded and unanimously carried. The writer will never forget the enthusiasm and hope the work­ers placed in the efficacy of the GENERAL STRIKE. The organizers of the 5 boroughs also favored such a move. A telegram was sent to the Mayor by the union informing him of the workers’ decision. Great excitement followed. The strike vote caused hur­ried conferences with the May­or, the real estate owners, the union and the Regional Labor Board. Had the strike been cal­led it would have involved about 200.000 workers. Major Curran issued the fol­lowing statement: “It must be plain to every­body that there was a great excitement in the air last night. Now that there is time for men to think a little more quietly, I cannot belive that the union will fail to keep its written word of honor given to the Mayor of the city last November to abide by the award of the arbitration com­mittee, whatever that award may be. “I know hundreds of union men and I know that they are as much men of honor as any other kind of man. I ask the people of the city to give them a chance to come promptly to their real judgement. “This award is not a scrap of paper. From a material point of view, it provides such great benefits for so many of the men that they would do a wrong to their own families to jeopardize it. In addition, they would hurt all the people of the city who live or work in elevator buildings —- hurt them grievously. This must not be. It will not be.” Mayor LaGuardia — the “liberal” Mayor — the friend of Labor — threatened to in­voke the health laws to use the Police, Fire and Health Dep­artments in manning key build­ings. However, after about 5.000 men had gone out another truce was reached. Here are the terms. “The award of Feb. 15 to be respected and observed, but the Realty Advisory Board agree promptly to propose to the owners of office and loft buildings who are signatories to the Mayor’s agreement of Nov. 25, a modification of the award in the following resp­ects: 1. The award in respect to office and loft buildings to run for six months, from March 1, instead of twelve months. 2. During the six months following March 1, the Admi­nistration Board is to take up and consider the question of classification of office and loft buildings and the employes therein, with a view to recom­mending reasonable minimum wages, for these classes of buildings and employes as a basis for the negotiation of a further agreement at the expir­ation of the six months’ period. 3. In respect to the closed shop agrements covering the garment and other areas, and signed on and subsequent to Nov. 3, 1934, it is understood that provisions in said agree­ment providing for arbitration of wages and hours, and work­ing conditions, are to be car­ried out by both the parties in the manner agreed upon, unless the parties are able to reach an agreement as to other means of arbitration or are able by direct negotations to reach an adjustment of all dif­ferences. 4. Only parties who filed acceptances with committee of arbitration and deposited them with the union on or prior to Feb. 18, 1935, are parties hereto. There will be more strikes in the future as thousands of buildings have not committed themselves to the Curran Award. Tens of thousands of workers organized in the BSEIU are employed in these buildings and are ready to strike as soon as the word is given. In conclusion let me say that this organization grew so rap­idly because of a strike and that the workers instinctively know their real power lies in the strike and their greatest power in the General Strike. The use of such a weapon brings home the bacon. The continued success of the orga­nization still lies in the solid­arity of labor. The closed shop must be attained. Then we will work for and if they won’t like it why they can lump it! John Feczko. COMMENT. Kidőlt harcos Nagy vesztesség érte az IWW newarki csoportját Krausz Miklós elhalálozásával. Az élet delén szólította el a könyörte­len halál közülünk május 16- án. Proletár betegség terítette le az osztályharc mezején. Hosz- szu idő óta vesebaj, asztma és ólommérgezés kínozta, mig vég­re megváltotta a szenvedéstől a halál. Krausz Miklós egy igazi meg­győződött IWW-ista volt, ki­tartó hü katonája volt a moz­galomnak, nem beszélt sokat, nem szolgáltatott anyagot a szájhősöknek a célnélküli érték­telen vitáknak. De annál többet tett, cselekedett. Temetése május 12-én, ment végbe a lindeni Crematórium- ban hamvasztották el a holt­testét. Szólásszabadság: Nem egy- gyezem egyetlen egy szavával sem önnek, de a késhegyig vé­delmezem, hogy joga legyen ön­nek azt mondani. SZILÁNKOK (Folyt, a 2-ik oldalról.)
