A Kémiai épület - The Chemistry Building Kalmár Miklós

THE CHEMISTRY BUILDING Győző Czigler, a lecturer of the university then, was first commissioned to design the would-be campus intended to be built beside Füvészkert (Botanical Gardens) cca. 1895. The programme of the construction scheduled later was also outlined on this occasion. As then a decision was made to transfer the Campus to Lágymányos, Czigler had to make a new plan in 1897, which was published in 1900. The development plan shows that the ground-plan system of the first stage of his design work did not change significantly as far as the Chemistry (Ch) Building is concerned. Thus the Ch pavilion was built between 1902 and 1904 after designs by Győző Czigler as the first building of the Campus. Dominating the view of the university towards Gellért Square, it uniquely preserves Győző Czigler's original architectural concepts. To organise the construction of the Campus in Lágymányos, the Construction Board 5 6 of the University of Technology held regular meetings during the project with members, who were either lecturers of the University of Technology or representatives of the CD f ministry. Apropos of the construction of the Ch Building, the names of Alajos Hauszmann O d and Samu Pecz were regularly mentioned besides Győző Czigler who was the "works ZD m managing architect". As clients of the project, the board, lecturers from the departments ^ concerned, the rector of the university and representatives of the ministry participated. The technical supervisor of the ministry was Alfréd Jendrassik, then Zsigmond Herczeg jjf architect. When defining the programme, former rectors, namely Lajos llosvay, Sándor Kisfaludi Lipthay, Gyula König and Vince Wartha, would-be rector, Aladár Kovács Sebestyén, would-be rector, as well as physicists Alajos Schuller and Ferenc Wittmann contributed, besides the architects. Not only famous architects, but also prominent Hungarian figures of science assisted in the Campus project. A routine was established during the design work and the realisation stage of the Ch Building, the experience of which was made good use of later on, and many decisions were made that affected the other buildings of the Campus, such as the substructure, selecting the materials of the walls and roofs, defining the structural system and appointing the building contactors. The budget of the construction, besides the purchase of the site, totalled 10 million Crowns, of which a sávalapozás terve I details of the strip foundation 10 % was allocated for the purposes oftheCh Building.(In the final accounts the costs of this project were calculated as 1.361.265 Crowns 44 pennies.] The honorary fee paid for Győző Czigler as designer and
