A Campus építésének története - Campus Construction History GY. Balogh Ágnes

CAMPUS CONSTRUCTION HISTORY On the 9th of October 1896 Minister for Education Gyula Wlassics submitted a bill to parliament requesting acquisition of land for universities. By this time the university on Museum Boulevard had outgrown its capacity. Article of Law 1897. XII. provided a sum of 12 million Crowns forthe purpose of land purchases and construction projects in the name of the Joseph Technical University. Previous plans had been prepared to relocate the Technical University (for example, on land next to the Botanical Garden and Ludovica Military Academy). Following dismissal of these earlier versions rector Vince Wartha and professor of architecture Győző Czigler submitted proposals for development of the Lágymányos site, located on the Buda side of the Danube between the new Franz Joseph Bridge (1896, now Freedom Bridge), Promontori Road (now Budafoki) and the later constructed Boráros Square Bridge (1937, now Petőfi Bridge). This land was affordable, centrally located, had good transport connections, had views towards the Danube and possibility for later expansion. By 1898 the majority of this land had been acquired by the Ministry of Education, during the following academic year the low-lying parts of the site were infilled. It took until 1902 to purchase the other areas. During the 1898-1899 academic year the Education Minister commissioned professor of ancient architecture Győző Cziglerto prepare general layout plans, construction plans and project management forthis site. These plans, prepared in 1897, were published in 1900. The newTechnical University in the eclectic style was designed to accommodate 2500 students. These plans consisted of a central building, enclosing four courtyards, with a central cupola. Here was to be the location of administrative offices and spaces to be used by mathematical, engineering, mechanical engineering and natural sciences courses. To the south of this central building a smaller wing was to contain the school of architecture and to the north administrators' residences. North of the central building a chemistry pavilion was located and to the south a first year students' pavilion linked by arched corridors. Czigler placed the library to the west of the central building, in a three-winged arrangement. Following the road side of the site departments of geodesics, physics and a youth pavilion were located, also a machine shop and agricultural machinery studies buildings. The implementation of these plans was expected to take 8 years. This original concept is recognisable now, even though only the chemistry pavilion was built according to this plan.
