Az egyetem kert és a kerítés - The University Garden and the Fence Zsembery Ákos
THE UNIVERSITY GARDEN AND THE FENCE The present-day park and its fence stylishly embrace the historical Campus of the University of Technology and its precious architectural ensemble. The garden was officially completed on November 14th, 1909 after designs by Armin Pecz landscape designer - the younger brother of Samu Pecz who had also been the designer of the landscaped park of the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Gardens. However, the general plan of the 1906 building permit and the description of the green areas included in Hauszmann's book on the new buildings of the University of Technology published in 1909 somewhat differ. Besides, photographs made after its opening prove that the conditions described in the latter did not exactly correspond to contemporary reality either. The garden almost following its original design is documented in aerial photographs made in the 1930s. The main circulation routes of the Campus garden were originally opened up by seven large gateways which also organised the main paths and axes among the landscaped insular green areas. A more extensive continuous asphalt surface was only integrated in the design on the southern side of the Campus, between the MM-MG, MT Buildings, the Boiler-House and the L Building. Ármin Pecz treated the green areas surrounding the Ch and F Buildings as wellseparated parts of design work. As a rule, symmetry defines the design of the park despite the irregular site boundaries around the Central Building and the Library. The areas of buildings on the southern side were cut off by a long path following the south-western contours of the site opened up southwest of the Library as far as the Engines Laboratory. Within this framework, the greeneries are organised by the entrance axes of the buildings. Besides a few components of landscape design, the original Neo-Baroque garden has preserved several trees till now (such as the oak-trees outside the southern entrance). As part of an ornate basin covered with pergolas, a fountain was built at the end of the north-south access axis running also beneath the "Bridge of Sighs". In 1927 a 3 m bronze sculpture made by sculptor Jenő Bory was erected on the northern side of
