26 BÍLKENT UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE Dilkent University is a very young institution founded in 1986. This academic year will be the fourth one. It is the only privately-funded university in Turkey at present. The university is located 15km from downtown Ankara, between two other major universities. At present there are around 5000 students in the university. The Bilkent University has five Faculties: Faculty of Engineering and Science, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Fine Arts and Faculty of Music and Performing Arts; and five Institutions: Institute of Engineering and Science, Institute of Economics and Social Sciences, Institute of Business Administration, Institute of World Systems an I Economies, Institute of Fine Arts. In addition the university lias three schools: School of Tourism and Hotel Management, Vocational Training School and The English Preparatory School. The physical growth is continuing with an increasing momentum with new constructions all around. The Faculty of Engineering and Science comprises six academic departments: - Computer Engineering and Information Sciences - Electrical and Electronics Engineering - Industrial Engineering - Physics - Mathematics - Chemistry The Engineering and the Physics departments offer both undergraduate and graduate degree programs leading to D.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Engineering and Information Sciences, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Physics. The departments of Mathematics and Chemistry offer service courses at all levels to students of the faculty. The Faculty of Engineering and Science promotes high level research as its number one priority, in addition to undergraduate and graduate teaching. In its short academic life, wc were able to hire among the best faculty members and attract "top of the top" undergraduate and graduate students. The student population in the Faculty of Engineering and Science is around 650. We accept 160 students each year to the undergraduate programs, 50 students to each one of the engineering de­partments and 10 to Physics Department. In the past two academic years the least qualified student admitted to our Faculty was 350'tli among more than 650.000 high school graduates who took the nationwide University Entrance Examination. 100 top Graduates of Turkish Universities with the highest academic achievements have already been enrolled to the graduate degree programs. COMPUTING FACILITIES To meet the educational and research computing needs of the faculty, a variety of computing resources are made available and operated for long hours including evenings and weekends. Over 300 state-of-the-art microcomputers are distributed between six laboratories and various research areas throughout tire campus. A rich collection of PC software is maintained. The SUN Microsystems Laboratory has 10 SUN workstations running under the 4.2 BSD UNIX operating system connected to a file server in an Ethernet Local Area Network. The file server also supports 16 terminals. A 32 bit, 6 MIPS superminicomputer system with 20 MBytes of main memory has attached to it over 2 GBytes of Disk storage, a dual density tape drive, a number of printers, a laser printer and a plotter. 144 terminals arc presently serving the user community.
