1947, the opening of the András Jelki Free Academy for Artisan Training on 28 February, 1947. The museum of Baja functioned under the name Lázár Mészáros Museum from 1948. From the cultural events of 1948, the “Hungarian evening” and other concerts of the Free Cultural Conservancy, the Vonatkert square festival and harvester festival organized by the National Committee in Baja, the Lázár Mészáros Memorial Day, the placing of a memorial tablet at the birth home of István Tiirr, the restoration of the Türr memorial at the bank of the Danube, the exhibitions made from the inheritance of István Nagy and the Teles Collection bequeathed to the city of Baja, the performances at the police day and the Kálmán Tóth remembrance celebrations are worth highlighting. The ministerial commissioner for private goods bestowed upon the city the Ladik-Bakóczy library in 1949. On 6 February of the same year, the collected exhibition of the members of the Rudnay Colony of Artists opened and on 13 March the cultural day organized by the Soviet-Hungarian Cultural Association were significant events. The public health situation didn’t improve after liberation significantly. The number of deaths due to cardiovascular diseases and tuberculosis was high. Vaccinations were used to defend against infectious diseases. The vaccines were produced at the laboratory of the local public hospital. Among the health installations of the city the public hospital had to face serious placement problems. The heating, water and electrical supply were still not in operation in May 1946. The financial situation of the public hospital was critical until the introduction of the new currency on 1 August, 1946. The institute for tuberculosis, the polyclinic for venereal diseases and the Nationwide Public Health Institute’s (OKI) local branch had to face similar problems. The ambulance service and the local transit services were provided by the firefighter service between 1945 and 1948. The Countrywide Ambulance Service’s ambulance station was established in 1948. The rural ambulance service and sick transportation service started providing services in May 1947. The Green Cross Health Protection Institute started home visits by district nurses, and the Institute also managed the children’s screening examinations from 1945 until May 1947. 751
