ISTVÁN KNIPL The Volksbund and the Waffen SS Császártöltés, Hajós and Nemesnádudvar are neighbouring villages in BácsKiskun county, established in the middle of the 18th century by German settlement. Most of the inhabitants here still were the German settlers' descendants in the 20th century, that's why the Volksbbund (Alliance of Native Germans in Hungary, founded 26 November, 1938, Budapest) could have a strong effect on their life. Local groups of the Volksbund were set up between 1940^-2 in these villages. Group leaders pressed many people to join the branch making promises and menaces. As the local organizations became stronger, their influence on the members gradually grew. The members had opportunity for relaxation, entertainment and discussing politics in the local Volksbund groups. Canvassers of the central organization took care of their political education by coming frequently into the villages. As the Second World War broke out and the strategic situation got worse, the mission of the Volksbund significantly changed. The organization had to provide the required reinforcement for the Waffen SS. A pact between Hungary and the German Empire offered a possibility for the Volksbund to performe this task. Therefore almost 120 000 Hungarian subjects of German descent got enlisted. As the Soviet army entered the country the Volksbund stopped its work, and a revenge was started, which brought a lot of suffering and indignity for the German minority in Hungary.
