PÉTERNÉ FEHÉR, Mária: The First Parlamentary Representative's Election (Summary) In 1848 the voting rights law granted Kecskemét the authority to enforce its interests by choosing its own representatives in congress. The author presents the history of this great social and political movement ta the life of the city, revealing the appearance of recognizable social interest groups, political trends, and power relations. The author discusses the franchise, stressing its importance as the main detenninant of political rights, and comes to the conclusion that not every strata of the eligible population could actually take advantage of the opportunity. KŐHEGYI, Mihály — MERK, Zsuzsa: Adaptations of Hungarian Sounding Name of Inhabitants Born between 1895-1945 in Baja (Summary) The authors examined the registers of births of a country town in order to draw conclusions from changes of names (in practice Magyarization) and their frequency. From every nationality of the mixed population (Hungarian, Bunyevác, German, Jewish) and from every social class changes of name occured, but not with equal frequency. Magyarization rose very high in 1934, as the authors succeeded in revealing from local sources. Magyarizations from 1920 to 1944 the greatest part of all the changes, in that the historical-political events of the period played a leading role. IVÁNYOSI-SZABÓ, Tibor: Data to the Social Conflicts of Kecskemét in the Reform Era (Summary) In the eighteenth century a considerable social tension arose in Kecskemét, a market town with a large number of inhabitants. Because their dissolution had not taken place, after the Napoleonic wars the economic stagnation strengthened them. The malcontents could always get support from the local nobility. The crisis of the guild trades turned some of the tradesmen against the magistracy, too. The published documents indicate the causes of the conflicts in the 1830's, and give the main, features of the reorganization. They indicate that one of the most important means of relieving the social tensions at this time was the parcelling out of the agricultural lands among the poor peasantry.
