472 Abstracts standing on Öreghegy in Tatabánya prove that even in a young industrial town, the role of wine cannot be completely neglected. In the introduction of my paper, based on the documents preserved in the Tatabánya City Archives, as far as the fragmentary documents allow, I will outline the grape and wine production, wine consumption and wine distribution of the four predecessor villages, which were organised under the feudal system prior to the town unification. Then, in the main part of the lecture, I will focus on the period from the town unification to the 1960s and examine the role of wine and grapes in the city, from viticulture and wine distribution to wine consumption, which, although not dominant, was certainly present. For this purpose, the City Archives holds relatively comprehensive records from the county municipal (1947-1950) and council (1950-1989) periods (tax records, liquor consumption registers. Production Department, etc.). László Mód - András Simon The Wine Region of Ménes-Magyarád at the Beginning of the 20th century in the Light of a Winery School Diary The wine-growing region on the western side of the Zarándi Hills, which has been called by various names over the centuries, was one of the most important grape and wine-producing regions of pre-Trianon Hungary, standing out not only for its unique varietal structure but also for its wine specialities. Especially in the second half of the 19th century, the economic development of Arad and Arad-hegyalja, situated 30 kilometres away, became closely linked. Among the vineyard owners, there were numerous townspeople who played a major role in the modernisation of the viticulture and winemaking sector. Thanks to these efforts, a winery school was established in Ménes in the early 1880s, providing the most up-to-date knowledge of viticulture and wine-making to future professionals. In 1905, Elek Smiri was a student of the institution, who kept daily records of the one-year training course. The work diary contains a wide range of information not only about the vocational training, but also about the viticulture and wine production processes and, indirectly, about the modernisation efforts in the sector. The paper attempts to analyse the viticulture-winery conditions and relationships of the Ménes-Magyarád wine region in the early 20lh century from the perspective of this unique source material.
