422 Abstracts spread and the intermediary channels through which these were rapidly and plausibly distributed. Although from the beginning, there had been contradictory findings and arguments about the name and legend, these remained unnoticed by the 19th century, until the visit of the German classicist, Theodor Mommsen. Analogies in literature re­veal that legends about the towns’ foundation or explanations for their naming were common in Europe and regardless of any historical anachronisms or misstatements, these legends contributed significantly to the shaping of the self-awareness of urban societies over centuries.
