600 Abstracts ZOLTÁN GÖZSY Functional Changes in the Market Town, Szigetvár from 1687 to 1749 The study focuses on those factors which transformed a market-town into a center in the Southern Transdanubia region during the transformational period at the end of the 17th and at the beginning of the 18th century. The study also focuses on the degree of functional changes which modified the positons of settlements, and also how the functions strengthened or the lack of functions made weaker the status of cities. In the 16th century, due to structural changes Szigetvár gained special responsibilies, that is to say, it started to function as a city with fortifications. After the wars against the Ottoman Empire which result the recapture of the Hungarian Kingdom, Szigetvár gained central roles because the military stationed there. Therefore, Szigetvár became the secular and the clerical, the administrative, the military and the security policy center. This was the situation during Rákóczy’s War for Independence and it made itself felt during the next decade as well. The castle of Szigetvár was strategically important for the state, for this reason the castle was modernized and enlarged. This was advangeous for Szigetvár, given the fact that that region was lack of state supported innovation. It is also worth highlighting that Szigetvár was not heavily hit by the effects of Rákóczy’s War for Independence. This fact, and the stationed military in the castle of Szigetvár, resulted that a great number of craftsmen and traders moved into the city and this and the soldiers of Szigetvár meant a significant improvement factor and developmental potentional. The mentioned advantegous influences, however lost their intensity by the 1730’s and 1740’s. The above mentioned functions on the one hand gradually lost their contents, on the other hand, Szigetvár could not adapt to the gradually evolving agriculture prosperity, mainly because of the relative narrowness of its borders and because of its swamps. Therefore, in Somogy county those cities and towns came into the limelight, which were in a better situation in terms of their agricultural and trade productivity. Similarly, those towns and cities came into the limelight which had central functions. At the same time, the development of Szigetvár slowed down.
