ZOLTÁN KAPOSI The economic elite in Nagykanizsa in the second half of the eighteenth century The study examines in respect of the second half of the 18th century the development of the market town that was owned by the prince, by the Batthyány-family. It analyses the historic process in the course of which the traditionally agricultural and handicraft town became more and more a trading town. It examines the composition of the economic elite of the town. In the course of this, it surveys those people, who had the largest real estate properties, then it analyses the town elite from the aspect of the most important occupation branches. The study concludes that during the examined half a century in Nagykanizsa the social elements, who were interested in trading increasingly obtained the most important positions. The number of careers increased, in the case of which people arriving from the economic field evolved into such personalities, who determined local politics. The study also examined the ownership transformation of the urban territories of the town as well, in the case of which the buildings of the town centre were acquired increasingly by the enriching trading class. An important element is the analysis of the economic activity of the Jewry. Starting with the years of the 1770ies the Jewry - enjoying the landlord support - became increasingly important within the town. These representatives of the economic elite could become stronger primarily during the French coalition wars - exploiting the opportunities of prosperity. At the turn of the 18-19th centuries one may found among the Jewish traders of Kanizsa families that had significant economic power and network even on the level of the empire.
