György Kövér introduces us to one of the highly respected bourgeois dynasties, living in their own palace on the avenue: the Herzog family, which had a powerful role in shaping the economic and social character of their age. The Herczogs emerged in the middle of the last century as expediters and grain merchants, and owing to the steady efforts of three generations became one of the wealthiest and "he most influental families in the country, founding their own private banking firm and many other enterprises. Eszter Gabor 1 ?, study provides an insight into the architectural and interior design characteristics of the representative villa area of the avenue through the examples of „Erdődy", „Semsey" and „Vanderbilt Gladys" palaces. János M . Rainerand László Varga recall the memory of the hard times of 19491956, when the avenue was renamed „Sztálin út". The authors - each choosing a dramatic moment of the 1956 revolution - analyze the ominous roles of the Soviet and the Yugoslav Embassies, both located on the avenue. Adolf Agai and Gyula Krúdy well-known Budapest novelists and story-tellers at the turn of the century, through some selected passages of their works, provide the reader with a colorful and literary as well as authentic description of city life in their time. Anna Fábri guides us along the avenue, showing us the famous coffeehouses and other popular meeting places of artists and journalists, as well as publishing houses and editorial offices dominating the prevailing literary and public life. Iván Mándy, a genuine Budapest writer and reserved literary gentleman tells us in an interview what a coffeehouse meant to him in those days, when it used to be the legendary „café". Zsófia Mihancsik conducted interviews with some present day prominent officials -János Lászay, Deputy Mayor, Péter Lantos, Chief Architect and Zsolt Baranyai, Head of the Building Committee - of Budapest's 6th district, where the avenue itself is located. They give an account of the recently formed development plans for the avenue, problems of monument protection, legal, financial opportunities and obstacles. Finally the last three items - facts and documents collected by Violetta Hídvégi, Katalin Jalsovszky and Emőke Tomsics - create an overall historic „tableau", publishing a list of owners in different periods, the name changes of the avenue and its surrounding streets, and some documentary photos of memorable historical scenes which took place on the „Andrássy út".
