430 Abstracts of Fiume in 1914, and on his withdrawal in 1915, which can be considered even more exceptional. My research is based on the archival material of the Records of the Prime Minister’s Office in the National Archives of Hungary and the records of the Governorship in the State Archives in Rijeka. I raise the question what lied behind the conflict between the mayor and the Autonomous Party, which elected and soon “overthrown” (?) him. The abuse of the podestá’s rights and the loss of the electorate’s confidence, or on the contrary, a peculiar power reallocation strategy of the influential personalities of the Party to achieve a more favourable position in the “fight” against the expansion of the state and the restriction of the city’s autonomy? I examine the role of the government and governor István Wickenburg in the conflict and raise the question how the seemingly isolated case of Corrosacz fitted in the governmental centralization process and in the context of the world war.
