Abstracts 461 The third part of the paper examines what happened to the moats of the fortifications in the interior of the Carpathian Basin, after they were no longer directly needed in the defence. The demolition of the castles and fortifications is well known; we would like to draw attention to the utilisation of the wetlands that surrounded the towns of the Carpathian Basin in the 18th century. The paper is based on economic documents, private letters, maps and landscape sources, which in a number of cases show that the towns made systematic efforts to make the most of these resources, which were in their close proximity.
