Historical Statistics of Budapest

Historical Statistics of Budapest The tables that follow are selections from the wealth of statistical material available on Budapest’s past. They include the changing population figures, with sub-divisions according to mother tongue, occupation and educational qualifications, the developments in the number of dwellings and transport communications, the figures for industrial workers and employees in Budapest, and the percentage in national terms, and finally a few typical figures for international comparison. The compilation and presentation of official statistics has naturally changed and improved in the course of time; figures provided in Table II, between 1880 and 1900, for instance only considered the “ordinary population” of Budapest, that is the permanently registered civil population, and its totals consequently do not agree with those of the total population shown in Tables I or III. It must be remembered that the earlier figures refer respectively to Pest-Buda and to Budapest prior to January 1st 1950, while later figures refer to the whole of Greater Budapest. But the statistics include figures relating to the Greater Budapest of today calculated in relation to the earlier periods (Tables I and VI). A dot in the table indicates lack of information.
