He was producer of the Budapest Hunnia Film Studio at the time of the uprising. He was an associate of the MÁVTI (MÁV - Hun­garian State Railway Institute of Designing). On 2 November he got an assigning letter from the Ope­rative Committee of the Revolutionary Armed Force Committee to take photos of the actions of the Ar­med Force. BFL XXV. 4. a. Lessing, Erich (Vienna, 23 July 1923 - ) He immig­rated to Palestine in 1939 after Hitler's occupying Austria, and became the photographer of the British Army. In 1947 he returned to Austria and worked for the Associated Press news agency, and then sin­ce 1951 he has been member of the world-famous photo agency, Magnum, founded by Robert Capa and David Seymour. His photos were published by Life, Paris Match, Picture Post, Epoca, New York Times, Tageszeitung and Quick Magazine, among others. He took photos of the events of Europe after the war, especially the moments of rebuilding Aust­ria. He worked a lot in the socialist countries as well. He took photos of several important political sum­mits, for example he was present at the negotiation series of the Austrian state contract of 15 May 1955 doing away with the four-party military occupation of Austria and also witnessed the visit by President de Gaulle in Algeria. He took photos of the main events of the 1956 Hungarian uprising. He was teaching in Aries, at the Venice Biennale, in Ahmedabad, in India, at the Summer University of Salzburg and at the College of Applied Arts in Vienna. In 1974 he got the title of a professor. Turning away from politics the attention of the photographer nowadays orients towards arts and the East. His awards and rewards: he got the award of the American artistic editors for his work carried out during the time of the 1956 Hungarian uprising and in 1966 he was awarded the Prix Nadar for his book compiled from the Odyssey. In 1997 he was awarded the Austrian State Award and in 1996 the President of the Republic of Hun­gary awarded him the Imre Nagy medallion. He has published over 40 books so far.
