Budapest arms & colours. Throughout the centuries (Budapest, 1998)
The Escutcheon of Buda, free royal town A pentagonal, violet-coloured escutcheon; a three-towered castle wall with an open gate, its lattice semi-drawn, on green ground. Above the big escutcheon there is a smaller, green shield with the national coat of arms, as a sign of Buda being the capital of the country, royal residence. There is a bouquet hanging down from the left and the right side of the escutcheon, as well as from the middle of its bottom line. The escutcheon is supported by a male figure from the right and a female figure from the left side, both dressed in Roman gowns: they are Mars and Minerva, symbols of War and Peace. On the ribbon of Mars's lance the word "tueor", on Minerva's the word "foveo" are inscribed. Their meanings: protecting in war, tending in peace.
