Budapest arms & colours. Throughout the centuries (Budapest, 1998)

The Arms of the City of Budapest "A Hungarian escutcheon, its ground colour gules. It is divided horizontally in the middle by a wavy, white /silver/ fesse, representing the River Danube. In the upper field above the fesse there is a one- towered castle/ with one gate/, in the lower field there is a three-towered castle /with two gates/, of yellow /golden/ colour. The background against the gate entrances is azure... The upper castle represents Pest, the lower one Buda, its second gate referring to Óbuda. Thus the colours of the escutcheon are gules, yellow/golden/, azure and white/silver/, with the Hungarian crown on the top, as an indication of the statehood of our country. On the right sidethere should come the lion from the escutcheon of Buda, on the left... the griffin from that of Pest; both the lion and the griffin should be depicted with claws." /From the minutes of a joint general meeting of the municipal corporations of BudaPest and Óbuda, held in the redoute hall of the city on May 29.1873- - 1 5.a./
