An appendix facilitates the use of the volume. It contains a chronological table, indexes of names, places, institutions, and a list of illustrations. As a result of the editiorial work outlined, we could more or less assure the uniformity and European outlook of the volume. This is what the subtitle: Europa et Hungária was intended to emphasize. Our own past talks to us from manuscripts sent to us from many European countries. From London to Rome, from Lisbon to Moscow, documents are lined up almost endlessly. One reads of diplomatic activities, of the setting up and moving around of armies, of their appearance on the Hungarian war scene, the victories and defeats of the imperial army, of the suffering of soldiers and population by the hands ofwinners and losers, of the liberation of Hungarians and the bitter years of reconstruction over the ruins. Scholars from the following 18 countries took part in this project: the Austrian Republic, the Kingdom of Belgium, the People’s Republic of Bulgaria, the Socialist Republic of Czechoslovakia, the Kingdom of Denmark, the French Republic, the German Democratic Republic, the Federal Republic of Germany, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Italian Republic, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the People’s Republic of Poland, the Republic of Portugal, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the Kingdom of Spain, the Kingdom of Sweden, the City State of Vatican, and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Source material for almost two decades has been brought together in this volume, awaiting further research and, perhaps later, completion of the gaps. 1273
